MATH 324
Professor Winner
Towson University
Reflection 1
Due: February 11

Date of Observation: Monday, February 2
Grade Level Observed: 4th grade
Math concept covered: PARCC test practice
Mentor teacher’s name: Jessica Ross
Intern (your) name: Samantha Meyer

Reflection 1: Physical environment
Physical environment:
I am interning at Hawthorne Elementary School in Ms. Ross’s classroom on Monday’s from 12:30-3:00. This is her first year teaching elementary and she loves math. She was a math minor and previously taught algebra in high school. Her class is very low in math so she finds this very difficult.
In her classroom she has a theme of “the beach”. Her room is highly decorated and all of the walls are covered with pictures and words pertaining to the students. The classroom has several posters related to math placed around the room. One of the large walls in the classroom is broken up into sections for each subject. Math has its own section with a “tip chart”. On this board the teacher provides the unit with key vocabulary words, definitions, and a picture. In the beginning, the picture section is blank and it is filled out through out the unit together as a class.
For example, the class just started unit 8, which is fractions. On the “tip chart” there are several key vocabulary words listed with the definition. Next to each word and definition is a blank space with room for a picture. The first word the class learned was “fraction”. The teacher read the word and definition and asked the class if they could come up with their own picture on their individual white boards. The class then had a discussion and decided on a picture to represent the word fraction. The teacher then went over to the board and drew the picture. This “tip chart” is very successful because it is helpful for students to look at through out the entire unit when they need help or have questions.

First of all the concepts in this course were based on the guidelines of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards for k-8 instruction. The council encourages teachers to encourage students by having fun while being taught for example fractions. Another way the concepts learned in this course are relevant to the characteristic of a professional mathematics teacher is the No Child Left behind Act. On Wednesday, April 7, 2010, I was blessed with the opportunity to sit in on a Mathematical class at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Riviera Beach, Florida. This was an opportunity to observe the function of a core class at the school that I teach and Substitute for. The teacher’s name was Mrs. Minor-Walker, which is one of our 7th grade teachers. When I walked into the classroom, I shook her hand and informed her of what I was intending on doing today. She was more than glad to assist with my assignment. These students were seventh grade students. This was an intermediate class, in which most of these children have encountered some sorts of issues with comprehending Mathematics prior to this year. Due to the…

Marilyn Burns, the author of the article "Nine Ways to Catch Kids Up" realizes that a handful of students are at risk in each classroom. Burns came into this realization after talking with a student named Paul about multiplication. She discusses three issues that are essential to teaching mathematics. This includes helping students make the connections among mathematical ideas, to build the new information on the student's previous learning foundation, and to accompany correct answers with an explanation.…

At times, Ariana chooses to stay on the rug after a lesson for additional support. This shows that she is being reflective of her learning. She appears to enjoy our inquiry work around mathematical concepts. In collaborative groups, Ariana offers her insight and pushes her peers to try out different methods. I often hear her say, “Wait everyone. I know we can try another way. So let’s just try it and see what happens.” Ariana would benefit from practicing his multiplication facts 6-12 to help increase automaticity. This will support her as she encounters complex problems. Additionally, Ariana would should continue to double check her work by using an inverse operation or alternative…

Although I have never thought of myself being the caring type of person, the Keirsey temperament test revealed my actual self and proved to me that I have a Guardian temperament, the functions of Guardians in society, what type of people they are, and how I might be as I grow older. Yes, I agree with the results of the temperament test because I feel that in a particular way I can relate with the characteristics of the Guardian and I would love to participate in civilization as Guardians do. I believe my temperament has not changed and that it has remained stable because as I have been growing older I’ve been…

The abacus, often called the earliest calculating machine in the world, has a long history. The Abacus is a Latin word from the Greek origin word ‘Abax’, which means calculating table (Dictionary.com, 2015). The evolution of the Abacus is said to be dated back to three separate ages: Ancient Times, Middle Ages, and Modern Times (Bagley, 2003). The abacus was invented nearly 5000 years ago, by the Chinese in 500 BC (Browning, 2009). The original abacuses were stones plates covered in dust, Later this evolved into a slate with groves where rocks and other counters were…
