Team Collapse at Richard
Written Case Analysis Due
Case: “Team Collapse at Richard, Wood and Hulme LLP”

1. OVERVIEW AND ANALYSIS: A senior associate at Richard, Wood and Hulme LLP (RWH) was amazed at the speed with which the audit team for an important client for the firm was rapidly falling apart. Two members had just been fired presumably because they did not pass their chartered accounting qualification examination; team morale had become non-existent; there were difficulties in completing the engagement due to lack of preparation from both the RWH and the client; there was a question about the commitment of particular individuals; and with the audit falling behind schedule, the senior associate perceived an absence of strong leadership from the partners of the firm. The senior associate did not understand why the team had been so unfocused from the start of the engagement as prior years’ engagements had been quite successful. He was not sure how to proceed. What would he tell the client? What should he do to keep this audit on track and keep the team together?

When considering whether or not to accept a new audit client, the successor audit should make specific and reasonable inquiries of the predecessor auditor regarding matters that will assist the successor auditor in determining the acceptance of the engagement. Matters subject to inquiry include: information that might bear on the integrity of management, disagreements with management as to accounting procedures, or other similar significant matters, and communications to audit committees regarding fraud, or illegal acts by clients. The engagement team of Billy’s Beats Inc. relied heavily upon management’s assumptions and integrity. By not communicating with the predecessor auditor, the successor auditor is blindly trusting management’s integrity and accounting policies.…

In any major accounting firm, ensuring that audit partners are qualified to supervise and audit engagement begins at the “top” of the organization and should be expressed through the actions of the firm. Partners should always be promoted and assigned to engagements based on their experience, training, and overall qualifications; never should promotions or assignment be based on anything other than absolute competency. Also, promotions and other considerations for employees and partners should be based on the…

Another problem in the case is that the company had provided inadequate staff training on its newly revised open-door policy. The company's ineffective training and implementation of the new policy meant that employees were unclear on their individual role and responsibilities for responding to and handling alleged misconduct. There appeared to be no clear procedure on the steps that management must take when they receive a complaint of misconduct. This problem was clearly apparent as lower, middle and upper managers all appeared to ineffectively communicate and follow-up with the appropriate parties regarding the misconduct complaint.…

    4) With all the movement in personnel, it should have taken Shad longer to finish the audit than the year before. The control risk is extremely high with the accounting personnel’s all resigning during the year and with all the inexperience accountants taking over. The comptroller resigned in disgust and the journals were a mess. With all this going on it would be more difficult to perform the audit, which would lead to the audit taking more time to account for the higher control…

    Metric Division Case

The Metric Division is a division that is currently undergoing significant change within an organization. They have recently reorganized, and are now responsible for an entire product line. Top management has been in place for five months and is now seeking ways to improve the working relationships within the division. Don, the national sales manager, feels that it would be very informative if all the staff members were interviewed to determine what could be done to help them work more effectively. To gather this information they have hired an OD consultant (me) to conduct the research and help them develop solutions to any problems that the division might be facing. To go about obtaining the needed information to conduct an analysis on the division, an action research model was used. Don was the one who was the problem identifier, and felt that the division could work better together. I am the OD practitioner that will help the division obtain this information. I will do this by gathering data, from the interviews with staff members. After the data is gathered a feedback session will be held with everyone to talk about the results, here the group and I can develop a joint diagnosis of any problems that were found. From there we can go on to develop a joint plan of action to fix the problems and improve on the current divisions working relationships. Then the action to fix the problems is implemented into the division, which can be assessed at a future date to see if it is making a difference by interviewing the staff after the changes have been put in place. This is one of the many models that can be used to access companies and determine how leadership and follower relationships can be improved.…
