The explanation of teamwork and collaboration is the effectiveness of communication between nurses and other interdisciplinary team members, that promotes open communication channels and demonstration of mutual respect in order to obtain the appropriate resources for patients. These characteristics help to achieve the highest level of quality care for patients. One major quality that is essential to teamwork and collaboration is communication. Schyve (2009) stated, “good communication is integral to high quality patient care” (p.7). It is my opinion that this a factual statement. In nursing our primary purpose is to promote patient safety and improve patient outcomes.
In my personal career, it is very important for me as a nurse to advocate for my patient and communicate his or her needs. I must do this by articulating those needs to the hospice medical doctor, social worker, chaplain and nurse aide. This will allow our team to ensure the comfortability of the patient and surrounding support. In the world of hospice nursing, I have the responsibility and moral judgement to make certain my patient maintains a level of comfortability.
