Teamwork Goes to the Movies
The movie that was selected to illustrate a high performance team in action was Armageddon which is directed by Michael Bay and stars Bruce Willis. Much of the material that we have studied illustrate that teams out perform individuals within an organization. This is most evident when performance requires multiple skills, judgments, and experiences (Katzenbach and Smith, 1993). In analyzing and comparing the characters and events in the movie, Armageddon, one sees many of the elements of a high performance team such as problem solving, goal setting, conflict resolution, and team dynamics. The traits of a leader were also visible through Bruce Willis’s character Harry Stamper. Hackman (2002) states that a leader must possess two critical skills; the first is skill in diagnosis and second skill in execution. Characteristics of a high performance team are evident throughout the movie.
Armageddon is an action adventure film in which a meteor the size of Texas is careening towards the earth. NASA scientists discover it after a meteor shower destroys the Space Shuttle Atlantis, killing the entire crew. They only have 18 days before the asteroid destroys the earth. NASA devises a plan to insert a nuclear bomb 800 feet inside the asteroid, when detonated, will split the asteroid into two pieces that will safely fly past the Earth. Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) is asked by NASA to help because he is considered the best deep sea oil driller in the world. After learning the details Harry tells NASA officials that the only way he will go on this mission is if he assembles his own team. According to Katzenbach and Smith (1993) there are three types of skills necessary to build a high-performance team and they are 1) technical and functional, 2) problem-solving, and 3) interpersonal.
The team that Harry assembles is made up of a couple of Geologists and four drillers for a total of seven. NASA adds six more members to the team to operate the Space Shuttle and detonate the

    J. Richard Hackman was a professor of social and organizational psychology at Harvard University. Hackman was known for his many contributions to our understanding of work design and team effectiveness. (Wageman & Amabile, 2013) He was also the author and co-author of 10 books. Throughout his career Dr. Hackman observed corporate boards, sports teams, orchestra players, telephone-line repair crews, hospital workers and restaurant kitchen staff members. (Hevesi, 2013) According to Hackman teamwork and collaboration are critical to mission achievement in any organization that has to respond quickly to changing circumstances. Rocky Gagnon should also know how to build a team. A team has a small number of people with good skills who are committed to a same purpose, set of performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. First off this is a great movie, and I’m not much of a movie buff. I found way more than just 2 ob concepts in this clip. I think that managing a team is a difficult task because it requires a hardy personality to be a calming rational thinker while taking others in consideration, and blocking the negativity or tension that maybe building. Bill Paxton & Tom Hank’s characters points out that the smartest people on the planet have been brought together to make sure every setting is correct, and all the resources needed are available. Tom Hanks points out that they have a large amount of variables to consider when overcoming the challenges before them, and they are just starting that “task” list so to speak. Making decisions fairly to limit the inequity amongst the group is vital to the members working together to achieve their common goal, getting home.…

    Apollo 13: Spacecraft

When Gene Kranz says that it will be there finest hour, he was completely true. It will be the finest hour for the Apollo 13 mission. They “won” while failing, because a malfunction which NASA had little to no control over which looked life threatening hit the astronauts and NASA managed to overcome the problem they had been faced with. The Apollo 13 mission in general was a failure because it stood no chance of accomplishing the goal it was supposed to. The teamwork that NASA developed during the Apollo 13 mission was astounding as everyone worked together to save those three people’s lives. The people were given the materials the astronauts had and worked to make a functioning device that could help funnel the power into the pod the astronauts were in to save their life. The biggest part teamwork played in the movie was the sudden change in crew. The crew had little time to adjust to their newly appointed pilot and they had to quickly adapt to the change in crew. The men not being as familiar to the new crewmate spent a lot of time in isolation with their newly appointed pilot and interacted well with the rookie who was a little shaky on the whole flying scheme. Apollo 13 can be considered the finest hour because it took a situation that looked very grim and had the odds working against them for every turn they took. NASA handled the pressure pretty well and they put everyone on the ground in the same situation that the astronauts so that instead of it seeming like there were only three astronauts to figure a way back to earth it was almost as if there were forty astronauts in space working to get back to earth. The greatest part of the mission was the skepticism that almost broke the mission from within. The pilot who was originally supposed to fly the mission thought it was impossible for the spacecraft to return back to earth with the power they had but he, while collaborating with the other members of NASA made it possible to return back into the…

Creating Effective Teams takes a somewhat unique perspective on leadership than many leadership books I have read in the past. I have read many books that place the greatest emphasis on the efforts of the leader in order for the team to be successful. Wheelan (2013) argues that the success of any given team is dependent upon the performance of all of its members. This book places a greater emphasis on the importance of teamwork.…

I'm jet lagged and tired. My alarm goes off, a screeching "beep, beep, beep!" I get out of bed, turn the alarm off, and begin my routine - coffee, shower, flight suit, bag drag from the lobby to the crew bus. Once all bags are loaded onto the airplane, we head over to base operations for our crew brief. Crew brief is complete and its back to the aircraft, so I can refuel, inspect, and then take off. This is my life as a C-17A Flying Crew Chief (FCC) stationed at Travis AFB CA. You're a jack of all trades when you're an FCC. The C-17A is a large military transport aircraft. It performs strategic airlift missions, and transports troops and cargo throughout the world. When on these types of missions, I'm usually gone from one to two weeks depending on whats going on in the world. There was a mission that took us from California to South Carolina to pick up Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. We crew rested there before we started our…

The group originally chose the project on respect towards older people aimed at 15-19 year olds however, following a group discussion decided to change the project to recognising stress in carers. This was because the group felt that the carers topic was currently highlighted in the media and there was a large volume of literature available from a variety of sources. The group also felt that the respect towards elders project was quite a broad topic which could be interpreted in many different ways which may have been challenging to convey on a poster. The group preferred a poster over a leaflet as they felt it could reach a wider audience when placed anywhere rather than someone having to physically collect a leaflet. The group also thought a poster would be more eye catching, easier to read and concise for stressed busy carers who wouldn’t want to read large volumes of text. 152 words…

What exactly is an effective team? The concept of an effective team refers to individuals who have been randomly selected to function as a collective group (professionally). As a group, they are responsible for meeting specific goals by illustrating excellent verbal communication, coordinating their efforts as a team; express the significance of planning procedures and techniques for making consensus decision. The evaluation of team effectiveness is the essential factor for competitive success in business today. These common factors are pre-determined on three critical levels: individual, environmental or group. Individual elements that a respective member must possess consist of special skills or talent; include the skills possessed by the individual members, confidence in being a productive team member and behavioral character.…

When it comes to teamwork, most people will consider teamwork in terms of being part of a baseball, basketball, or football team. In contrast, a team is “really just a group of people who use their skills, experience, and knowledge to work toward a common goal” (Beverly K. Bachel, 2007). Teams working together in the workplace are extremely productive and profitable. Teams working together increase problem-solving skills and innovation, quality, and decrease turnover and absenteeism. (Scarnati, J 2006) Teams have an overall high success rate when well structured and the communication between the team members stays open throughout the project. A team is a collection of individuals who have gathered to achieve the same…
