In the book Technology and Society: Opposing Viewpoints, Joseph D’agnese discusses our loss of privacy on the internet: “. . .almost every move you make is catalogued in service to the gods of commerce. They know what you’re buying. What you listen to. Where you chat” (D’Agnese, 180). This has become very scary for our generation as our personal information can easily get out. Not enough privacy lowers our happiness level. We feel as if we are being controlled and watched.
Cyberbullying is another downside to social media. The definition of cyberbullying is,“The act of harassing someone online by sending or posting mean messages, usually anonymously” (Dictionary.com). It is so easy for teenagers to say something through the screen rather than in person. It creates more drama as people crave the attention on Twitter or Facebook. Communication and careers have been directed with technology. When we get so glued to our phones that we can’t go an hour without them, that is what is wrong with our generation. Our online personas stop us from really living. Cyberbullying tears us apart and privacy is taken away. We are not living when we sit in a room all day scrolling through our phones and laptops. Our generation needs to gain back happiness in this world. Life is about creating yourself, making connections and discovering places. We need to use technology as a helping hand, not as a controlling
