Technology Based Assessments: Improving Education
The use of technology will revolutionize the next generation of assessments. Assessments are only valuable if teachers can access and use the data that they provide to drive instruction.
Goal: At all levels, our education system will leverage the power of technology to measure what matters and use assessment data to improve learning US Dept. of Education, 2017).
Assessments are a critical component of educational success. They help teachers guide learning and ensure that all students are on track to meeting learning benchmarks, goals, and state standards. Technology based assessments can help reduce the time, resources, and disruption to learning that was required for traditional assessments while also providing results in a more useful,

While we use technology in the form of videos, on-line trainings, and access to materials for professional learning and development, we are not connected to many outside communities for the purpose of staff development. Many of my colleagues, myself included, have sought outside learning through the use of technology on an individual basis. Many universities have extension coursework available through online programming (such as CSU global) for certification and degree work, but there is also a plethora of programming for topic specific learning that is free or very affordable and open to everyone. In the future, I hope that my district schools start using some of these resources to enhance our professional learning …show more content…
The National Education Technology Standards and Performance Indicators for Administrators has published some important pointers for school leaders to recognize when they have reached milestones in this area:
Visionary Leadership- Leaders work with their team and school specific needs to develop and write a shared vision for comprehensive integration of technology around student achievement.
Digital Age Culture- Leaders work with their team and school specific needs to create, promote, and sustain a dynamic, digital-age learning culture that maintains a rigorous, relevant, and engaging curriculum for all students.
Excellence in Professional Practice- Leaders work with their team and school specific needs to promote an environment of professional learning and innovation that empowers educators to incorporate technologies which enhance student

    It is important not to loose sight of the students needs in light of the “sparkle of technology”. Many teams employ the SETT framework when beginning the assessment process. During this process, the team will review data about the student, the environment, the task and the tools. (SETT) Together this information is used to find the appropriate assistive technology to implement.     There are two major pros to using technology to assess student learning. First, assessing student learning via computer is faster and more efficient than doing it in other ways. Computers can simply score student work as the students take assessments. This means that teachers do not have to take the time to grade the tests themselves. Second, assessing student learning via computer is more objective than doing it in other ways. If human beings grade student assessments, they are likely to have problems being fair. They might grade a particular test badly based on their mood, or the fact that they are hungry, or the fact that the student has bad handwriting. Computers are not subject to such problems and all assessments will be graded objectively. The main con to doing this is that tests that can be given by computer are inherently limited. These tests have to be multiple choices. Computers cannot, at this point, judge written answers. They cannot judge projects that students submit. They can only grade such things as multiple choice or true/false questions or questions where the answer is a number. This severely limits the sort of subject matter that can be tested and the sorts of skills that can be tested. The only scenario where a teacher should stick to one just one type of teaching is whenever the teacher has just one type of student. Since there is no such thing as one type of student, then there is no reason to stick to just one intervention or strategy to teach. Technology is only one of several teaching processes from which students can learn. Even in the digital age, there are bound to be students that may prefer to learn through manual skills such as arts and crafts, others through poetry or literature, others may even prefer to problem solve mathematically, and there is always the odd percent of students who suffer from "Techno stress" and get frustrated too quick if the technology is too complicated, or not fast enough for their taste.…
