Today, people can’t imagine their life without their phones and tablets. Technology does have its benefits, but when the addiction starts trickling into young kids, most consequences are negative.
Although technology can be beneficial if used moderately, over-dependence and excess usage has a negative impact on young children. Today, we’ll first discuss how devices affect the bond between parents and children. Then, we’ll take a look at how health issues can arise from the overuse of electronic devices. Finally, we’ll examine how unreasonable amounts of screen-time affects how well they perform in school.
Firstly, technology can interfere with needed bonding and attention. Dr. Jenny Radesky, a developmental behavioral pediatrician, …show more content…
says that “Face-to-face interactions are the primary way children learn.”So, when parents are excessively absorbed into their phones instead of paying attention to their children, it can hinder their learning progress. (http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2014/04/21/304196338/for-the-childrens-sake-put-down-that-smartphone) During an observation she conducted, she noticed that 73% of parents in the 55 she saw used a mobile device during a meal with their kids, and many paid more attention to the device than their kids. She also noticed that the children whose parents were preoccupied into their phones were the most likely to act out. They probably felt like they were competing to get attention. Not-so-great parenting, yeah? However, when parents do this, it leaves emotional consequences on the child. The results from an interview with 1,000 children about their parents’ usage of phones was shocking-and heartbreaking. Words that came up again and again were: “sad,mad,angry,and.lonely”.(http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2014/04/21/304196338/for-the-childrens-sake-put-down-that-smartphone)
Secondly, technology affects people physically and mentally. Therapists have been seeing more people with ADHD,anxiety, depression, etc, which may all be connected with technology overuse.(http://mashable.com/2011/08/09/kids-tech-developmental-health/)
(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cris-rowan/technology-children-negative-impact_b_3343245.html) Furthermore, screen-time causes stress reactions, which can lead to health issues. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-volpi-md-pc-facs/technology-depression_b_1723625.html)(http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/stress.aspx)Another consequence is that the brain’s formation can become permanently altered. The visual and auditory systems of the brain are overstimulated, while other systems are under-stimulated. This causes problems in neurological development.
Lastly, children’s brains have not evolved to accommodate high-speed tech.
Because their brains are still developing, it’s very malleable.(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cris-rowan/technology-children-negative-impact_b_3343245.html) Attention, especially, is influenced by the environment. For instance, if they read, there is little distraction, and it requires attention, focus, and memory. Watching television or being on the internet, on the other hand, requires little attention and has many distractions. If young kids neglect activities where they have to concentrate, they might have problems later in school. A recent study on elementary aged children shows that students who spent more time in front of a screen were 1.6-2 times more likely to develop attention problems.(http://www.everydayhealth.com/adhd-awareness/does-technology-cause-adhd.aspx) You might be thinking that in school, using technology can help you learn and concentrate. While that is true in some cases, technology can also divert your attention. In fact, an experiment shows that students who had Internet access during a lecture didn’t perform as well as those who
didn’t.(https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-power-prime/201212/how-technology-is-changing-the-way-children-think-and-focus)
So today we’ve looked at how technology affects kids negatively. We’ve seen how it upsets the bond between child and parent, how it can cause health issues, and how it affects attention and performance in school. If kids overuse technology when they are young, it’ll probably cause major problems in the future.Parents should limit the screen time for young kids, and put down the tablets or phones for meals.
