Imagine this, being a kid in the 1700s and having to deal with war, death, and rivals that could possibly go to war and bring it to your home state.Im 1793,France and England went to war while America stayed out of it because they didn’t want to go war so the United States stayed out of it,in the middle the year, the United States and Britain signed the Jay's treaty which stopped most the problems of the two…
The French-Indian War was a major turning point in relations between the Americans and the British. American colonists were generations removed from their British ancestry, and it showed on the battlefield. The Brits and Americans had different tactics and ideals during the war. These differences created bitterness between the Americans and British economically, theologically, and socially following the war due to the fact that the British controlled the colonies and could therefore tax them/tell them what to do. If two countries hate each other, and one of the countries has control of the other one, problems are bound to arise, as they did between America and Britain following the French-Indian War. These problems would eventually lead to the American Revolution.…
Tecumseh, a Shawnee Chief condoned the United States’ government for not upholding to their treaties. “Since the peace [The Treaty of Fort Wayne, 1809] was made you kill’d some of the Shawnees, Winebagoes Delawares and Miamies and you have taken our lands from us” (123). One of the main reasons that so many tribes sought British alliance against the United States was that the US governments had taken advantage of the tribes and were killing them. There was an evident response and approach when dealing with European and Non- European groups by the American…
The New England Colonists highly valued religion and rules. Some well known colonists are the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims came to the New England Colonies for freedom of religion. They believed that the Church of England had gone to far beyond Christ’s teachings. There way of dealing with serious crimes was execution. The lesser crimes were handled with fines. There was one law on guns, if you did not bring a loaded gun to church you were fined 12 shillings. The church building itself had no significance to the Pilgrims, and was usually called simply the "meetingplace" or "meetinghouse". The meetinghouse was kept drab, and had no religious icons. The pastor was not essential to the church. Another well known group of colonists are the Puritans.…
The document I’m analyzing is Tecumseh’s speech to the Osages that was written in the winter of 1811-1812. I chose this speech by Tecumseh, a Shawnee leader, because he made an effort to do everything he can to not let the white people infiltrate the grounds on which he built his life on. He brings up the issue that the reason why the others tribes didn’t survive or was forced off their land was because they didn’t help each other out. The same thing will happen to the Shawnee tribe and the Osages if they do not form an alliance. Tecumseh didn’t stand by and let the White settlers, businesses and the US army take over his home, he spoke out to different tribes to get everyone that was left to unite and defend what is theirs. Tecumseh also brings up the point that they have treated the white men with hospitality and warmth and in return get nothing but animosity. This source is reliable because during this time there was a war going on to drive the Indians off their land either by force or death.…
Britain and France were constantly in war. America had a hard time staying neutral to both countries, all America really wanted was to trade with both countries and not go into war. France passed a law in…
The War of 1812 was America's way of proving to the World that they were a force to be reckoned with. Although at first they had nothing to do with the war between the British and the French, eventually they were caught between the battles and saw that there were reasons for them to go to war. First, the British attempted to restrict U.S trade to Europe. Second, the British Royal Navy's impressments of American seaman enraged many Americans back home. Lastly, Americans saw the war between the British and the French as a chance to take advantage and try expanding its territory into Canada and Florida. The very interesting thing about this war is that even after they had called a truce nothing was ever resolved but it established America's credibility as a powerful nation.…
The War of 1812 was a conflict between the United States and Great Britain The British were restricting the United States’ trade because they feared that it was harmful for the war they were having with France. Also in the Midwest the British wanted to set up an Indian state, so they would be able to maintain their influence in the region. The war started in 1812 and lasted until 1814. America went to war with Britain for many reasons.…
Tecumseh, a Shawnee Indian born in 1768, rose to be one of the greatest Native American leaders of all time. During the late 18th century, for the most part, the Indian population in North America did not have a voice when it came to the English settlement. However, Tecumseh soon became their voice. Issues of land arose after the American Revolution. Throughout the American Revolution, the Shawnees fought alongside Britain in hopes to defend their homeland. Britain’s eventual surrender led to the Treaty of Paris in 1793. The Treaty concluded that Britain would cede all land west of the Appalachians to the new American Republic without any representation of the Native Americans in attendance. The loss of land meant the loss of lives to the Indians.…
The English had never been or explored any other places except where they’d always lived. So when this new idea of immigration came into the scene the English were and little confused but also interested on what else was out there for them to see. New ideas and ways of living were founded in this time of immigration.…
Although often viewed as inferior, savage and helpless, many historians are starting to discover the intelligence and wisdom the Indians had and shared with the colonists that came to America so long ago. As the settlers slowly began to create a new world on the already inhabited North America, they were plagued with starvation due to a severe drought in the area. Due to the dry lands and the settlers expectations to “rely on Indians for food and tribute,” (Norton 17) they were disappointed to find that the Indians were not so keen to handing out food and help to the strangers that have just come onto their land and begun to settle in such a time of severe weather and starvation. As time goes on, both the Indians and the Englishmen realize they both have what the other needs; tools from the white men and crops, land and knowledge from the Indians. As a result, the chief of Tsenacomoco, Powhatan, and colonist, Captain John Smith on an ideally peaceful, mutualistic relationship to ensure the survival of both civilizations. This agreement will leave the groups in cahoots for 100 of years leading to some disastrous scenarios and betrayals.…
At the start of the seventeenth century, Native Americans greeted European settlers with much excitement. They regarded settlers as strange, but were interested to learn about the new tools and weapons Europeans brought with them. The native people were more than accommodating to the settlers, but as time passed, Europeans took advantage of their generosity. “Once these newcomers disembarked and began to feel their way across the continent, they forever altered the course and pace of native development.” Native Americans and Europeans faced many conflicts due to their vast differences in language, religion and culture. European settlers’ inability to understand and respect Native Americans lead to many struggles that would eventually erupt into violent warfare.…
“Why must you take by force what you could obtain by love?” (Chief Powhatan) This was a famous quote said by Pocahontas’ Father to early English settler John Smith. The quote helps illustrate the brutality that settlers used to obtain land and goods during early colonization. The articles “Your People Live Only Upon Cod” and “The Print of My Ancestors’ Houses are Every Where to be Seen” help show, through the perspective of the Natives, that the nature of relationships of Natives and Non-natives in early America was at first beneficial, but over time the relationships became corrupted and would slowly deteriorate due to Europeans belief of supremacy over Natives, Europeans forced conversion of Natives’ lifestyle to Europeans’ beliefs, and Europeans hostile take over of Native land.…
