Teen Pregnancy Pregnant teenage mothers are under pressure and feel like they can’t handle the responsibility of taking care of a child. For those teens who decide they can’t raise their baby, there are two alternative options, abortion or adoption. Abortion is the termination of pregnancy prior to birth. Adoption is the process in which both biological parents give up their parental rights to a chosen family/ individual.
Abortion is a more common trend in teens today. More than 40% of girls under 20 get an abortion. For teens who are younger than 18 it’s about 70% and if they’re under 16 the rate is at about 61.5%. There are some teens who don’t want to have an abortion but end up losing their baby by having a miscarriage, which is around 14% of teens. In total a third of teen mothers end up deciding to receive an abortion rather than becoming a mother or giving the baby up.
The “less than 1%” of teens that do decide to put their baby up for adoption, do so mainly because of religious or moral beliefs. For example, on the show “Teen Mom” the mother Catelynn and her boyfriend Tyler decide to give their daughter up for adoption. It was a hard decision for them, but they felt that it was best for her. They knew they weren’t ready to raise a child because they were still children themselves. Although they do not get to see her regularly, they are able to see their daughter from time to time and receive updates about her, so they are not fully out of her life. In their case this works for them. Adoption is typically harder for women to deal with because the mother gets attached to the baby during pregnancy.
Teen pregnancy is a common trend that is increasing. Everyone has their own view on what they should do with their unplanned child, each of which having their own reasons. Statistically today, it is more common to have an abortion rather than giving the baby up for adoption. The younger the teen is the more likely they are
