Each year over 157,000 youth receive medical between the ages of 10 and 24 receive medical care for self-inflicted injuries at Emergency Departments across the U.S. there’s some groups that are at higher risk than others. Boys are more likely to die from suicide than girls, of the 10-24 ages reports there were 81% of the deaths were boys and 19% were females. The reason why is girls are more likely to report their attention in committing suicide than boys .Cultural variations in suicide rates also exist, when it comes to native American youth their suicide rates are highest (SAVE-Suicide Awareness Voices of Education. http://www.save.org.). A recent survey of youth in grades 9–12 in public and private schools in the U.S. found Hispanic youth were more likely to report attempting suicide than their black and white, non-Hispanic peers. Teenagers that commit suicide usually experience strong feeling of stress, confusion, self-doubt, low self-esteem, pressure to succeed and some other fears. For some of them a broken home like a divorce, the formation of a new family with step parents or step brothers and sisters can be very scary and unsettling
There are several risk factors that can cause a teen to commit suicide like:
• History of previous suicide attempts
• Family history of suicide
• History of depression or other mental illness
• Alcohol or drug abuse
• Stressful life event or loss
• Easy access to lethal methods
• Exposure to the suicidal behavior of others
• Incarceration
Most of the parents are unaware of the symptoms and most of the times don’t know why their children commit suicide. There are some signs that parents need to be aware of , some parent consult a psychiatric for help. Some of the signs and symptoms of suicidal are similar to those of depression, like:
• change in eating and sleeping habits
• withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities
• violent actions, rebellious behavior, or running away
• drug and alcohol use
• unusual neglect of personal appearance
• marked personality change
• persistent boredom, difficulty concentrating, or a decline in the quality of schoolwork
• Frequent complaints about physical symptoms, often related to emotions, such as stomachaches, headaches, fatigue, etc.
• loss of interest in pleasurable activities
• not tolerating praise or rewards
A teenager who is planning to commit suicide may also:
• Complain of being a bad person or feeling rotten inside some kids think they are not good enough.
• give verbal hints with statements such as: I won't be a problem for you much longer, Nothing matters, It's no use, and I won't see you again , they drop those hints like they are joking but they’re not.( www.yspp.org › Suicide & Self Harm)
• Put his or her affairs in order, for example, give away favorite possessions, clean his or her room, throw away important belongings, etc.
• become suddenly cheerful after a period of depression
• have signs of psychosis (hallucinations or bizarre thoughts) (www.yspp.org › Suicide & Self …show more content…
harm)
No one should be ignoring those signs, a lot of the time people blame the living victim. Some teen are dealing with their sexuality, or they have someone that they have trusted and loved that abuse them. And they are afraid if they do tell someone they will be the one to blame. Some of them don’t feel like they are leaving a lie when it comes to their sexuality and they don’t trust their parent or they are afraid if they tell their parent about their sexuality they won’t accept them. I don’t think there’s any sign when it comes to someone sexuality. Bully play a very important in suicide, some kids doesn’t know how to handle someone picking on them every day. Kids this day are so mean and rough, all they care about are themselves.
Some people don’t know how to handle when someone come to them about being suicidal. I know I don’t but since There are many resources that are available online and in most of the school. I’m a parent and my child is basically a teenager, I always try to read her and analyze her personality and see if there’s any change.
Not all cases of suicide are preventable; some kids don’t even show the signs nor have any symptoms.
You can see a very energize kids and very happy commit suicide. It’s impossible to know what’s really going on behind close door, not everyone is easy to read. Teen depression lead to suicide, the best thing to do if you see some depress is try to have them open up, validate their feelings listen more to them instead of talking
One of the reasons that I chose to write this paper is because that topic is very close to home. A few years ago a lost my little cousin, he took his own life. Growing up he has always being different, as a boy he wasn’t interested on any sport. When you do push him into to it, he will suck at it. His dad will call him girl’s name, and bully him. After so long he couldn’t take it anymore, and he took his life at the age of 15. When it happens people start to blame one another. But it was already too late; Some parent don’t take the time to know their kids, they think provide a roof, put food in the table and clothes on their kids life are the only things.
Teen suicide in this world in general is getting out of hand, no one respect one another. People don’t value life like they used to, a teen can have everything they want or everything a parent think they want and still not happy. Material things can’t make someone happy, parents are so busy with work that they don’t even have the time to learn their kids’
lives.
