INTRODUCTION
The aim of my project is to produce a written script of about four to five minutes in length for a typical teenage genre film, as well as a production piece consisting of a poster to market the film to target its age group or audience and a DVD cover front, spine and back. I will begin my report by providing research into the chosen genre concerning teenage films and provide an example showing the textual analysis of the poster DVD cover for a well known teenage film. I will discuss the targeted audience for this particular genre and finish by analyzing my own film poster and DVD cover.
For my research I watched various teen movies from the teenage genre. My proposal is for a teen relationship …show more content…
story to be titled ‘CAUGHT IN THE MOMENT’. My film is based on a mixture of teen movies I have watched. I then decided to make it a typical story of a teen young love relationship with an unpredicted twist nearing towards the end. This would give the film instead appeal to today’s audience.
REASERCH
The key factor behind a true teen romance storyline is the love or relationship between the two main characters. The teen genre films, though it sounds straightforward to categorize and stereo type as a genre, is in fact a difficult genre to describe or define because there are so many different ways of going about it. They also have very distinctive traits such as ‘the school locker scene’, ‘the prom scene’ etc.
Some common codes and conventions that would be found in teenage films can include the following; alcohol, high schools, proms, parties and all night raves, as well as concerns about relationships with friends, partners, importance of social groups and cliques, as well as concerns about loosing virginity and pop culture.
For my research I studied conventional teen movies such as Clueless (Amy Heckering 2005) as well as Dazed and Confused (Richard Linklater 1993) The Faculty (Robert Rodrigez 1998) and 10 Things I Hate About You (Gil Junger 1999)
One of the films we looked at ‘Clueless’ is a fairly conventional teen movie ‘chick flick’. It contains iconic signs of main characters. The audience can see clearly who the main character is as she is the biggest on the film poster and DVD cover. She is placed at the front with the two friends behind which is an indexical code that they are part of a small gang or clique. The pink and purple background connotes girls, love and friendship. The title ‘Clueless’ anchors the viewers suspicion that these girls are spoilt or rich and that the character of Cher Horowitz played by Alicia Silverstone is the ‘queen bee’ or the most clueless of them all. At the top is a sub title ‘sex, clothes, popularity. Is there a problem here?’ this conveys the typical teen movie aspects.
The back cover also attracts teenage girls through a combination of visual and language codes.
The iconic smaller pictures of the characters indicate the different personalities and dress scene of the other compared to Cher. The hyperbolic review text code ‘two thumbs up’ thus generating excitement for the target audience and is anchored by the blurb. The age rating is for kids and families, it would seem to be a light-hearted teenage genre film.
POSTER AND DVD COVER ANALASYS
The poster and DVD front cover are both dominated by pictures of the main character. This connotes that she is the main actress or protagonist in the film. This also tells us that she will feature heavily in the film. Furthermore, the audience will sympathise with the main character. On the DVD cover the facial expression of the actress along with her quite content look, where she is looking to the side strongly indicates that she was once happy and content in the film and maybe something went wrong.
The tag line ‘Teen movie of the year’ by the Independent, a phrase that anchors the genre and makes it clear to the consumer and target audience. The main title on the DVD front cover is placed at the top in order to fully reveal the main actresses stance thus placing more emphasis on
it.
The title on the poster is written in bold, and has much bigger font than any other piece of writing on the page. I chose this title because that the audience will have a stronger interest and greater wish it watches the movie. The main title and the slogan are scrolled directly across the bottom half of the poster, thus will direct the reader through anchoring the two actors as the main focal point.
When looking at both the DVD front cover and poster, the colours are bright and vivid symbolizing a fun and attractive, eye catching movie, and at the same time illustrate the mood and tone for the film.
At the top of the poster and DVD front cover, the names of two recognised actors are written in bold. This would help promote the movie for the targeted audience.
When looking at the poster you can clearly see examples of hyperbole several times all in bold. For example ‘teen movie of the year’ but the independent. This will defiantly generate a greater thrill for the target audience.
Looking at the back of the DVD cover, the pictures and smaller pictures are used to show more snap shots of the film. This will be favoured by the teen audience as it will help them want too see even more of the movie. As it is a 15+ rated film this would attract a more grown up teenage audience and at the same time will show a more mature side to the film widening it appeal to people in there twenties.
