Module 4
1. Dovid composed this famous kapitol during one of the most dangerous and discouraging periods of his life. He was a forlorn fugitive, fleeing from Shaul Hamelech and his army. In desperation, Dovid hid himself in a barren, desolate forest that was very desert like because it was parched and dry.
The first two verses, Dovid is singing that I don’t need anything and won’t need anything. As it says: "He causes me to lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters". Even though Dovid was in the middle of a desert, Hashem made sure he had green pastures i.e. food, shelter and water, not just water but still tranquil waters that are clear and sweet as opposed to torrential waters which are turgid and muddy. Adom and Chava also were in green pastures of Gan Eden until the Sin of Knowledge and they were outcast to the real world troubles pains and suffering.
In Posuk 3 and 4, Dovid is on the run from Shaul Hamelech he is in exile in middle of the desert. As it says: "Even when I walk in the valley of darkness, I will fear no evil for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me". Even in the time of his Golus, Dovid has complete Emunah that nothing will happen to him and Hashem will protect him. We, as the Jewish nation must also in the time of Golus have complete faith and belief that Hashem will bring us to no harm and will redeem us very soon with the coming of Mashiach Ben David.
In the last two Posukim, Dovid is asking Hashem: "May only goodness and kindness pursue me all the days of my life, and I dwell in the house of the Lord for lengths of days". Goodness and kindness means material success, but this is prefaced by the word "Only” meaning just enough to live here in this lowly mundane world lest his real luxuries and wealth in the Olam Habah he is deprived of or slightly diminished. The Jewish people as well are in Golus suffering but this is only as a cleanser so they enjoy all the luxuries in
