Bangladesh is emerging as one of the fastest growing mobile telephony markets across the globe. For many years, the Bangladesh mobile handsets market was dominated by ‘grey’ mobiles, which contributed 80% of the total handset shipments in the country until a few years ago has now fallen below 20% in the country. Nokia, which was a leader in Bangladesh lost market share with the growth of the domestic player, Symphony Mobile.
The telecom sector in Bangladesh has seen growth in mobile penetration that has exceeded all expectations with over 109 million subscribers as of September 2013 versus only 4 million in 2004.Bangladesh telecommunication regulatory commission claimed that the mobile penetration is 66.36% among the whole population with a growth of 10% per annum. Along with Bangladesh, only 12 countries in the world have more than 100 million active subscribers. The latest BTRC data showed the number of subscribers of six cell phone operators--Grameenphone, Banglalink,
Robi, Airtel, Citycell, Teletalk--at the end of August stood at 45.26 million, 27.69 million, 24.97 million, 7.97 million, 1.33 million and 2.11 million respectively.
Bangladesh cell phone (Mobile) market sells approximately 18 million units of sets a year.
Symphony, Samsung, Nokia ,Walton, Maximus, Micromax are the major brands and other brands Siemens, LG, Philips, Motorola, Sony Ericson, I-Mobile, Malata, Sprint ,Techno and
Huewei sell the most. Bangladesh currently imports at least 18 to 20m handsets every year. Out of it, over 10% sets are 3G-enable.
According to CMR’s Bangladesh Quarterly Mobile Handsets Market Review, 2Q CY 2013, the
Bangladesh mobile handsets market recorded shipments of 5.1 million units during the period
