Tennis-Related Injuries In Tennis Research Paper
Training and workouts are not only important for becoming and developing into a stronger player, but also for preventing the sport-related injuries. Workouts will strengthen the major muscle groups that are used in the sport. In tennis, the most common sites for injury are the back from overuse when transferring forces, the shoulder from rotator cuff tears, the knee from overuse and stress on the patella, the leg and ankles from muscle tears, and the wrist and elbow due to the overuse of ligaments and tendons. Key ways to prevent these injuries include warming up and cooling down, working on flexibility, strength training, aerobic training, and anaerobic training. The pectorals are the main muscles in the chest. The main muscles in the shoulders include the deltoids and the rotator cuff muscles which are often injured in the sport of tennis. The main muscles in the back are the rhomboid and trapezius muscles. The major muscles in upper arms are the biceps and triceps and at the end of the chain are the flexor and extensor muscles in the forearms. The most common tennis-related injuries occur in the upper-body muscles. To try and reduce the chances of these types of injuries, it is important to strengthen these muscles which can be done through using free weights and resistance bands. Varying between these two will make sure the muscle won't adapt too well to one method, constantly working the arms. The wrists are used in the serve and overhead and to strengthen the wrist flexors, wrist curls and wrist rotations are important exercises. It is important to curl and rotate the wrist in both directions and alternating between both hands.     The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that work together to stabilize the shoulder while connecting the humerus to the scapula. The four muscles include the Teres minor, Infraspinatus, Supraspinatus, and Subscapularis. A cuff around the humerus is formed from the tendons of these four muscles. While lying below the scapular spine, the teres minor and infraspinatus muscles are in charge of externally rotating the shoulder. Teres minor is initiated more when the arm is abducted to 90 degrees while the infraspinatus acts when the arm is in neutral. The supraspinatus is in charge of initiating abduction and works during the whole range of abduction of the shoulder. This muscle also lies under the scapular plane. On the other hand, the subscapularis muscle is in charge of internal rotation of the shoulder. It is also the strongest and largest muscle of the rotator cuff.
