Semester at Sea Fall Voyage 2012
Date: June 17, 2012

How will your Semester at Sea voyage create (or enhance) your personal global perspective? As a young boy I’ve always been interested in traveling the world and seeing how people from other cultures live and maintain a lifestyle .Since moving to Miami I’ve seen, met, and experienced many of the different cultures of the world but really haven’t grasped the full experience of them. Now that I have that chance to travel and grasped that full experience I must seize that opportunity and take it. Being born in the South (Memphis, TN) restricted me from knowing and learning about different cultures because of the environment that I was reared in. Now that I’m out of Memphis I want to experience everything there is about the world. One particular country that is on the itinerary and that I’ve always wanted to visit was South America. Semester at Sea voyage will help me to experience and see the things that I’ve always seen on television about South America. It seems to be such a beautiful place to be with many beautiful people to match. I like to watch channels like Discovery Channel, National Geographic and Food Network about South America. . I imagine myself being there experiencing the lifestyle, cultural, the people and food. Always had an interest in the Amazon jungle and all its wonderful wildlife. I’ve read a lot about the Amazons sacred jungle tribes deep within the rainforest. The city I’m looking forward to the most is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio de Janeiro is home to one of the seven wonders of the world, which is the Christ the Redeemer statue. It overlooks the city on top of the highest mountain in Rio. Being that I’m a Christian it is not only a personal experience but also a spiritual experience to whom I believe in which is Jesus Christ. I’m also interested in the Brazilian cuisine. I want to try the different array of meats, exotic spices, vegetables and fruits that

Brazil is a vast country rich in natural resources and beauty in the continent of South America. Located in the east-central coast of South America, it is the largest country in South America occupying nearly half the continent. Brazil’s topography is vast with its most priceless treasures inarguably being the Amazon Rain Forest. The Amazon River and its components attribute to two fifths of the country with the Amazon Basin making up 40% of the continent of South America (“Brazil”, n.d.). The Portuguese settlers were the first to arrive in Brazil and quickly found they were not alone, discovering the many tribes of natives that called Brazil their home for hundreds and maybe even thousands of years. These Portuguese settlers were not determined to conquer as the Spaniards, but were poor sailors who were seeking items for trade. This made it easy for the settlers to intermarry with the natives as well as the slaves they had brought from Africa, creating the mix of races known in Brazil today (Geographia, 2006). The Portuguese were not the only ones to seek Brazil to escape their situation and they were quickly joined by many immigrants such as French, Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, African and Arab, with Portuguese remaining the dominant and official language of Brazil. These cultures have blended into one…

Throughout my life I’ve been fortunate enough to travel outside of the country to Puerto Penasco multiple times. In the first trips I never thought about the people or the conditions surrounding the place I was traveling to. I was naïve and unable to understand my surroundings. However, as I matured the way I viewed Puerto Penasco changed as did my worldly perspective. I was able to understand the divide of wealth in Mexico, how the drug trade is affecting those who don’t want anything to do with it, the beautiful culture and people of Puerto Penasco and how U.S.A is benefiting and improving this amazing country.…

"Hurry up! The plane leaves in two hours," my mom reminded me as I swiftly, yet reluctantly continued to stuff more and more belongings into the tiny taxi. Waving good-bye to family members and friends, who I had spent my whole life with, was an exceptionally uncomfortable and difficult task. On the way to the airport as my mom tried to comfort me, she constantly reminded me, "Life will be no different in the Dominican Republic than in the USA." However, this proved to be false as soon as I stepped off that plane. Not understanding a single word being said around me, I realized I would have to adapt to a new culture, but at the same time carry on my own.…

    Mexico Personal Narrative

To begin with, the most incredible part of the trip was Mexico’s culture. The country was alive and booming with so many different traditions, I felt like I was being transported to another world every time I ate a new dish or saw a new dance. When we made our way to my father’s village, they were celebrating the harvest season. There was a whole festival to welcome the change of season. Men as well as women sported traditional white attire, consisting of stunning white, floral embroidered dresses for the women and simple white button up shirts and pants with rounded yellow straw hats and red handkerchiefs for the men. Both were dancing “El baile de la Piña” or “the dance of the pineapple”. The dancers were swaying with pineapples in hand, thanking the god of harvest and the fruit for providing them with food for the village. With this in mind, I wasn’t amazed at how deeply connected everyone was with the earth. They treated her with love and respect. The animals, they cared for them dearly, knowing the importance they served in their everyday lives. In fact, entire routines convey stories dedicated to animals and plants, love and war, life and death; everything remembered and…

When it comes to Latin American culture, most chalk it up as one giant place that contains all as Spanish speaking countries; however, the cultures create differences where every country can be completely opposite to the other and not be forgotten in the background by another country. Although we all speak one language we have many different accents and modalities. The stereotypes are never ending some of which include: fiestas, siestas, and mañana. Searching for information on the cultural differences between the Latin American cultures is a surprisingly challenging task. Culture is complex to say the least. What we see on the exterior such as language, clothing, appearance, celebrations, art, or design is a echo of deeper, fundamental ideologies,…

We traveled to the Caribbean and visited 7 islands, I got to witness the way they live life there and the different culture as well, not to mention how beautiful it was there.I remember when we went to Saint Kitts island my siblings and grandparents went swimming and, at that time, I had tubes in both of my ears so I had to wear this headband thing to protect them from the water. Because of the headband, I had a rather noticeable sunburn line on my forehead for the next week but it was all worth it for that experience. I learned a lot on that trip, like how they dock the boat and tie it down, banana plants, how friendly the people are there, nature there, and much more. I also observed people living in poverty, who didn’t have the latest and greatest gadgets. Ever since I have tried to never take living in America in a middle-class family for…
