Abstract
Around the world there are over 50,000 flights per day by plane, and over 78,000 passengers on trains in the U.S. Trains stations, Airports, and Bus stations are the most vulnerable, and also a magnet for terrorist attacks because of low budget for security and public awareness. Around the world, there have been terrorist attacks that have made the world aware including, London, Moscow, Tokyo, Madrid, Paris, and the United States. Terrorism is an act of violence to intimidate for political purposes. That can be a hijacking of an airplane; in fact, four airliners have struck the United States on September 9, 2001. Also, bombing of a local bus station, or a mass shooting at an airport. TSA has put a lot of awareness into public safety with stricter security and procedures.
Terrorism Involving Transportation Systems
The use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes. (Terrorism, 2012) An act of violence can be by assassination, suicide bombing, hijacking planes, destroying buildings, and bombing of a mass transportation system. Specifically using a mass transportation system as a bomb, this has still made worldwide attention when it happened on September 11, 2001 that killed over 2,900 people. This included four airliners from American and United Airlines, which killed over 260 people, including 19 terrorists. Airports, rail stations, buses, and ferries have a large number of people in a small enclosed space which is an attention for a terrorist attack plot. In the past twenty years, numerous cities have been targeted by terrorists. London in 2007 which was coordinated attacks by homegrown terrorists that killed more than 50 people on public trains. Madrid in 2004 which was coordinated attacks by a terrorist cell that killed more than 190 people on a commuter train.
