Thought history there have been numerous appearances of tessellations. For example in the Sumerian civilization approximately 4000 B.C they used tessellations for walls, temples, and homes. They were built with clay that they turned eventually turned into tessellations. They became part of the makeup for a lot of buildings for this civilization. Tessellation can also be traced back to many historical cultures like the Arabic, Byzantine, Chinese, Egyptians, Greek, Japanese, Moors, Persians, and Romans. In Ancient Rome tessellations were small tiles that they would cover the floors and walls with and eventually make a bigger picture with the tessellation. Also a lot of snakes skins, fish scales, and turtles shell are examples of irregular tessellations with hexagons, squares, diamonds, and other various non regular shapes. Tessellations are even around us in everyday things. For example the basis of the carpet or on parquet wooden floors. In brick walls are made of the same rectangular shape repeated over and over and laid in a row which will make a regular tessellation.
