Why Do Bees Build Hexagons
Bees know that the hexagon is superior to the square and the triangle because this shape will hold more honey and requires the least amount of energy and material. Bees have not studied tessellation theories, however some of their behavior patterns can be explained mathematically. A commonly asked question is, why do bees build hexagonal honeycombs? Through this unit I have seen the importance tessellations contribute to bees livelihood, as well as their success as insects. Bees not only use their honeycomb for food and shelter, but strive to store their honey in the maximum amount of space they can achieve. As a result of bees needing to maximum storage for their honey, they require a design that would complete this essential necessity. Bees built cells/storage compartments to hold honey and decided to use hexagons to accomplish this. This precise geometric shape makes quite a difference in how their honeycomb turned out. This hexagonal honeycomb was created to have a perfect fit with each hexagon leaving no gaps, unlike a circle, pentagon or octagon. By minimizing gappage there is more space for honey and this allows bees to use less wax, which is harder to produce. This makes hexagons a perfect shape …show more content…
Tessellations allow observers to examine the importance shapes have and their effect on the volume. In this project I discovered the difference of volume between different shapes and that the smallest subtleties caused a major volume difference. For example, a circle may hold more volume than a hexagon but a hexagon fits a bees needs more than a circle. This is because wax is harder to produce so by having more space in between each circle shape the more wax needed. With hexagons the least amount of wax is used complementing the bees more than any other shapes experimented with during the bee

Any set of numbers that is a repetition of one number (I.e. 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1. 7,7,7,7,7,7,7. e.t.c) will also make rectangles. Also numbers that repeat two of the numbers but not the third one (I.e. 1,1,1,2,2,2,4. 3,3,3,3,3,1,5,5,5,5.)will make rectangles that will just go off and not return to their starting point.…

To create a line segment and copy it, I connected points a and b to create a line segment. Then, I took my compass and placed the tips on points a and b to measure it. I placed my compass on point c and drew another line segment connecting the line to point d and so created my copied line segment. To create the hexagon inscribed in a circle, I created points n and o and drew a circle around them making the two points my radius. Then, I measured points n and o to create point p on the circle and keeping the same measurement I created point q on the circle and repeated this process until I had created points all around the circle (r, s, and t). Finally, I connected the point p to point q then, to point r and so on until I had a hexagon.…

When we think of bees, what do we think of? Do we think about getting stung? The sweet honey that they make? What about their crazy mathematical genius? Bees have, somehow, figured out that they should use hexagons for their honeycombs. How? I hove no clue- do I look like an apiologist to you? No. But I do know that the method the bees use is the best method for their intent.…

While the hives of bumblebees, honeybees, and other bees vary slightly, they all use very complex and similar building strategies. The cells of each honeycomb are constructed to be sturdy, save space and energy, and save on material necessary for construction. The swarms of bees that are able to construct the best cells, using the least amount of energy and wasting the least amount of wax will succeed the best. They will then transmit these instincts through inheritance to offspring, leading to the next generation that have the best chance of survival. “Thus, it seems that the most wonderful of all known instincts – that of the honeybee – can be explained by natural selection having taken advantage of many…

“Most people don’t have any idea about all the complicated life going on inside a hive. Bees have a secret life we don’t know anything about” is a quote by August that talks about how people don’t know the way Lily’s life is and what she’s been through (148). The Boatwrights don’t know that Lily has been treated really badly by her cruel father. This is just the same as the bees because people don’t know how the bees live and they just see them flying around collecting honey. They don’t realize that bees need the queen bee in order to survive. Without the queen bee, as if Lily needs her mother, she will run away to find another motherly figure to survive.…

Poverty is a struggle for anyone to withhold their sanity, however, it slips under one’s radar and steers them to become mentally ill. As the lengthy music video for “Desert Song” performed by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros opens, an impoverished yet innocent child is seen stranded in the desert. As the video draws a close, the little boy had been transformed into a troubled poor man who was clearly struggling to find his identity, resulting in his mental demise. The continuous rugged conditions forced upon Alex, the main character in the video, created a stressful environment, which defeated all hopes of Alex being rational. The video focuses on the continuously increasing mental effects that corrupt the brain because of such difficult living conditions. Alex initially attempts to concur his mind by not thinking about his horrid living condition, but as everyday struggles erode his mind, he becomes mentally ill. The video “Desert Song” claims that being indefinitely alone can cause a person to become mentally ill, as a direct result to the lack of social ‘norms’.…
