Since the First Crusades, there has been a German hospital in the Holy Land, which was built for traveling pilgrims, who left Germany to visit the Holy Land. The founding of the hospital was funded by rich German brothers and knights, which was led by Duke Frederick Hohenstaufen, son of Frederick Barbarossa, Emperor of Germany. After the Jerusalem conquest of Saladin, this establishment was soon broken up due to the foul control of the retched Heathens. During the Third Crusade, German pilgrims from Bremen and Lübec and the Duke of Holstein established a temporary hospital under the besieged walls of Acre. The port city of Acre was under Heathen control and attacking Crusader Knights were destined to abolish the resistance. After the Crusader victory at Acre, this hospital was permanently established in the port city with the funding of Frederick of Swabia, leader of the German crusade. Also, at the same time religious knights from Germany were loyal to this noble cause of the defense of pilgrims. These various Knights were to be a part of The Order of Teutonic Knights, which quickly took its place beside the other two orders of Jerusalem, the Hospitallers and the Templars. In the name of the Pope and the German Emperor, Duke Frederick of Swabia was given the honor of being proclaimed Grand Master of The Order of Teutonic Knights. These Knights have served God and His Church well in the Holy Land, protecting pilgrims and fighting as Knights of Christ against the heathen.
