Texting and driving is a huge problem in the world and particularly the United States today.
Being impaired at the wheel not only puts the driver in danger, but also the other people around
the vehicle. Not only is texting and driving is outright stupid, it is one of the most dangerous
things you can do while driving. Think about it. Is whatever you’re responding to that
important that it should be put over everyone’s safety around you including your own? People
need to realize that texting and driving is a serious risk and can cause countless losses of life.
There is nothing worth texting about that is more important than everyone arriving to their
destination safely. Studies …show more content…
While most
people would agree that driving drunk is a serious things, I don’t think most people realize just
how serious texting and driving actually is. Right behind sending a text is reading a text. The
perceived risk of reading a text had a score of 6.98. While this is a bit lower than
sending a text, it is still extremely dangerous. The testing did not stop at just the perceived risk
in number, though. In a survey of the before mention participants, 63.5% said they send a text
while driving, 82.8% read a text while driving, 69.2% make a call and an astonishing 94%
answer a call all while driving. There are roughly 300 million people that live in the United
States; 94% of 300 million equals 282 million. That means 282 million people look down at
their phones to answer it whenever it rings. 207 million people look at their phone to make a call
and 190 million people actually send a text while they are driving. If we look back at our
numbers from the perceived rick factors, we see that sending a text is perceived as almost as
dangerous as driving drunk. Since the numbers are so similar, think if their were 190 …show more content…
If we look at these stats, we see that texting and driving is a very real
and serious problem. The scariest thing about all of these stats and facts are the teens who
answered that they don’t see anything wrong with using their phone in a dangerous way and
driving. The clearly just don’t understand the risk they are not only putting themselves at but
also the other people around them. While nothing will ever fully stop teeing and driving, steps
must be taken to stop as much as we can.
There are many solutions to stopping texting and driving, but along with the ideas mention
earlier which primarily focused on young people, older people text and drive as well. What
really needs to be done is just the importance and seriousness of not texting and driving needs to
be stressed to all age groups. While this sounds broad, it will be the most effective thing in
stopping this dangerous habit. Once it clicks with someone about how dangerous this is, they
will stop; there is no doubt in my mind. Once people realize how dangerous this is, that will
