The movie Edward Scissorhands emphasises how hard it is for a person out of the norm to actually be accepted by society. People judge others by their appearance before getting to know a person. When seeing someone or something to new, some sort of comment or reaction will come into a persons’ mind; whether it be good, bad, or just simply a thought. Many times if a negative impression is given off by a person that you are not well acquainted with, automatically you will feel a sense of disconnection towards that person; leaving the mentality that the other person is different and you do not want to accept their differences.
Edward is a perfect example for the new person that is shunned by society without, even consulting …show more content…
him with what happened; no second chance was given. He is not human but is an unfinished creation.
In the scene where Edward is fooled into breaking into Jim’s house, Edward is used as the scapegoat.
Once inside the house, the group, including Kim plan on taking money from the house’s safe. Edward is used to pick the lock. When Edward enters the room with the safe, the security system was tripped and he was trapped inside. The group scatters and leaves Edward to be caught by the police and blamed with the break in. Edward was taken advantage of and had to pay the price for Jim’s greed and jealousy towards Kim’s relationship with Edward. He is thought to be a freak and of course, everyone would assume it would be Edward that would break into a house and not Jim. In the movie, there were several gothic elements. The main ones were the twisted, convoluted plots, grotesqueness and architecture. The twisted plot, stems from Edward Scissorhands himself, he is not normal; he was created by an inventor and had scissors for hands. He was never finished because the inventor died. The grotesqueness in the story ties into Edward’s overall image. He is pale, his hair is long and messy and his clothes are dark and made of leather and other like materials. His hands look like mechanical scissors stuck …show more content…
together. The townspeople went from being lovely to hateful.
There is a dispute over the female in the movie, and in the end one of the characters dies. He first appears to be a gentleman, he seemed to love Kim and was polite to Edward when he was around other people, but he became jealous. All the occupants of the town have the same kind of house and same type of life styles. When Kim began showing interest in Edward, Jim pushed him around and started drinking more. They were both outcasts to some degree and they never quite fit in. He was not like everyone else and that stopped all possibilities of him being accepted or thriving in the Suburbia environment. He didn't know how to live with normal people and he was so different in appearance that no one would accept him. By taking Edward out of his elements, he was forced to adapt to a "normal" lifestyle with little guidance or understanding. I don't agree with how people live their lives to only gain more money or power, but that is how things seem to run. He had a drive to accomplish something out of the ordinary. Heidegger wanted to see how people reacted to the fountain of youth, while Edward's creator wanted to invent Edward and make him a normal person, but halfway through his quest, he died, leaving Edward unfinished and left in the mansion
alone.
Edward Scissorhands is not simply a fairy tale. It does not have a happy ending. Edward had to stay in the Gothic castle for the rest of his life because he could no longer stay in the community. We feel pity for him as he was created by an inventor who died before he could give him a pair of human hands. He had been left in the castle alone on his own for a long time before the Avon lady brought him in her family. He was actually a gentle and vulnerable creature at his heart. He never intended to hurt anybody. However, he cannot fit in the community, despite the great effort made by the Avon lady.
Edward's skill with topiary sculpture and hair design made him popular in the neighbourhood - but the mood turned just as swiftly against the outsider when he started to feel his own desires, particularly for the Avon lady’s daughter Kim. He could not take his eyes off her, for she looked so pure and beautiful. Unfortunately, an evil character, Kim’s boyfriend Jim acted as an obstacle between Kim and Edward. He even tempted Edward to go to break into his wealthy father’s house. Edward was caught red-handed. Starting from that day, his reputation started to go down and down. The slut Joyce accused him of trying to rape her. Kim’s boyfriend was jealous because Kim left him and stayed with Edward. At the same time, Edward accidentally hurt Kim’s brother and the whole community banished him. All the people wanted to hunt him down. It was sad because the people actually discriminated against Edward. As Edward had a pair of razor-sharp hands, they blamed him for risking their lives. In fact, Edward was a kind and childlike person, but because of his Scissorhands, people only used him of his skills with topiary sculpture and hair design but failed to trust and respect him.
