“Thank you M’am”
In the story “Thank you M’am”, by Langston Hughes, a 15 year old boy named Roger attempts to steal Mrs. Jones's purse, however Mrs. Jones furiously caught him, after a few of questions Mrs. Jones quickly changed her thoughts on Roger, after asking him if there was anybody home to tell him to wash his dirty face, she became nicer to Roger. From that moment and on she started to care about Roger more and more. She decided to bring him home to teach him a lesson about the importance of being well-behaved, She also brought home because, Roger reminded her, of her childhood and she didn't want him to do the same mistakes as she did.
In the story there is a lot of textual evidence that shows that Mrs. Jones wanted to teach Roger a lesson. One example is shown on page 7, lines 45-47: “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?” This quote really shows how Mrs. Jones wants to help Roger become a well-behaved boy, by teaching him good manners so he would behave himself, and not do illegal things like stealing things… It also shows how Mrs. Jones cares about him because she asked her if he’s hungry. Later on in the story she gave him half of her 10 cent cake, which is really generous knowing that she gave it to someone that was trying to steal her purse.

“I have done things to which I would not tell you,son--neither tell God, if he didn’t already know.” This shows that at sometime in her life, Mrs. Jones did things that she regrets doing. And is trying to help him avoid the mistakes that she did. And help him become a “normal”
