Thank You, Ma Am, By Langston Hughes

In the story, “Thank you, Ma’m”, by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, a ‘large’ woman, bravely walked the streets of her small town, at eleven o’clock in the night, when all of a sudden a young boy of 14 named Roger tried the steal her pocketbook. Mrs. Jones grabbed the boy, tackled him for good measure, and lugged him to her house, where she coaxed the reasons why he stole out of him. Satisfied with the answer that she got, Mrs. Jones cooked the boy dinner and talked with him in a light manner. Mrs. Jones did this because she saw a chance to impact this young man’s life, and stop him from making the same mistakes again and, later on, suffering the according consequences to his plausible crime.
