That Was Then This Is Now Analysis

This essay is to compare and contrast the book and the movie of That Was Then, This Is Now. The movie and book are similar yet very different. The movie keeps some of the scenes the same from the book. There was many difference between the book and movie though. The book has more details and portrays the characters differently. The movie portrays Mark and Bryon as different people as they were in the book. Mark was more sympathetic as to Bryon was a bit more self centered. Mark showed guilt from doing the things he did and showed anger for the things happening. When Charlie died Mark took it harder than Bryon did. Bryon just brushed it off while Mark grieved. The book showed Mark didn’t see it as his problem while Bryon grieved and took it hard. Mark showed no guilt or grief in the book. Bryon had a big heart and tried to keep everyone on good terms. In the movie they come off as punks. The movie made it to where Mark sold the drugs to M&M and he felt bad for it. In the
I liked the book better than the movie because the book had more details. The movie made Mark and Bryon seem like punks. They didn’t regret any of their actions most the time. The book showed how they really felt and made them more relatable to the reader. The book made it easier to understand why they were doing what they did. Their characters were more open and enjoyable in the book. The movie made the boys all seem like jerks and the girls seem dainty or bratty. I like the book because the time period they were in. The 80s theme was great but the 60s was better for the story. The movie was good but it just didn’t do justice to the book. I love the fact that the book has the greasers and Socs. The movie didn’t really have any of the greasers in it besides Angela’s brothers. I don’t like the fact the movie didn’t have those or the hippies in it. They were an important part of the storyline.
