Anoosha Ahmed That Was Then This Is Now, SE Hinton’s novel plays with two friendships. Mark and Bryon, who treat each other like brothers, evolve into total enemies. Both of their personalities drift apart and they become totally different people at the end of the story. Bryon, for instance changes drastically because he pays attention to his girlfriend, Cathy more than he does to Mark. Mark, however, feels neglected and does not get along with Cathy. As a result, Mark grows apart from Bryon and he begins dealing drugs. When Bryon finds illegal drugs under Mark’s mattress, he calls the police instantly, without thought. If Bryon had found the drugs in the beginning of this novel, he would have acted differently. I believe Mark is held responsible and guilty for how thing ended because Mark is responsible for himself, the dug drug dealing was his choice, and Bryon’s did what was best for him. …show more content…
Mark and Bryon obviously treat each other as if they were real family, and they were the closest thing to one another.
Nevertheless, they are both individuals and they are responsible for themselves. Bryon cannot always make choices for Mark, and vise versa. For example, Mark began to sell drugs. Mark should have been responsible and he should have known right from wrong, but sadly, that wasn’t Mark’s choice. Bryon, on the other hand, informed the police station as soon as he found the drugs in Mark’s bed. This was the mature and responsible way to handle the situation. If Bryon had chosen otherwise, he would have shown no progress and stayed the same throughout the whole book. Thus, Bryon wouldn’t have shown any signs of development and responsibility from the start to the very
ending. I believe Mark is at fault because he chose his own path. He chose drugs and criminal activity, rather than a regular life with Bryon. When I was growing up, going to middle school, I became carefree and nonchalant. Thankfully my mother straightened me out. She told me, you choose your life and what you do know, affects your own the future. This occurred to Mark because he started selling drugs, which was his choice. Selling drugs affected him from the time he started dealing to the very end. It affected him in the beginning because he was hiding it from his best friend, Bryon. It had an affect on him at the end because he got in trouble for his unnecessary actions. For ever cause there’s an effect. Furthermore, Bryon cannot be blamed because he is doing what is best for his friend, Mark. If Bryon did not call the police, there would be no guarantee that Mark would stop dealing drugs. Bryon clearly did not want to watch Mark get in hurt in the future. The novel states, that Bryon’s mother told him, “You did the right things. It’s only best for Mark.” This proves that even Bryon’s mother believes that he chose the right move to make. Even though Mark believed that Bryon turned against him for Cathy, he would not believe all of the love that had stored up in Bryon’s heart for Mark. Mark couldn’t realize that his best friend did it just for his sake. In conclusion, Mark is responsible for how things ended up because he chose his actions and he cannot blame anyone else for what he did. If Mark did not want to get in serious trouble, he should have chosen to be more responsible and picked the right choice. Then he would have obviously been an improved person at the end and a more mature adult. His main blame was Bryon, but Bryon was the one who helped him get some help in the future and be a better person. No matter how much Mark denies the truth, that Bryon helped him at the end; he will never forget the times they had. Just as a wise man once believed, best friends are on each others side until the end, and that’s exactly what Bryon did.
