The 6th Major Extinction

An Extinction is when tens of thousands are in danger of dying out completely. A Mass Extinction is when multiple different kind of species die out completely. Human activities do the most damage to animal habitats. Human activities include Illegal hunting, pollution from factories, and moving in of an invasive species which could mess up the whole ecosystem. Another example of human activities was back in the early 1800s, there were about 2 billion Passenger Pigeons in the United States, not long after they were killed for sport and food, the last of it’s kind died in a zoo in 1914.

Elizabeth Kolbert wrote The Sixth Extinction as an attempt to explain and give examples of what seems to be a 6th extinction event currently happening in the modern world. We have discussed and learned about five other extinction events throughout this semester, and Kolbert pushes this 6th extinction event as a new rapid extinction predominantly caused by humans. One of the underlying causes of this 6th extinction event discussed in the book is the mass killing of both animals and humans. Another underlying cause of this extinction event discussed in the book, which is probably more prevalent now than ever before, is climate change caused by humans. This book goes chapter by chapter giving examples of various species that are on the verge of going…

The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History, an award winning book by New York Times author Elizabeth Kolbert dives into the sixth mass extinction on earth, but unlike past mass extinctions, the direct cause of this one is from human impact. Humans impact the world negatively simply by the way they live, as Elizabeth says in the book “Though it might be nice to imagine there once was a time when man lived in harmony with nature, it’s not clear that he ever really did.” ^1 Where it might have been more true in early human history, that humans lived as animals do, in harmony with the world; humans have exponentially increased their global negative impact by use. Human activity stems into three basic groups of global impacts which affect the…

It is believed Earth may be in the midst of another mass extinction, also known as 'The Sixth Mass Extinction '. This mass extinction is the first for 65 million years since the Cretaceous-Tertiary period. "It 's the next annihilation of vast numbers of species. It is happening now, and we, the human race, are its cause ' (Leakey, 1995). Every year, between 17,000 and 100,000 species vanish from our planet, which will result in fifty per cent of the Earth 's species vanishing inside the next 100 years.…

With over seven billion people living around the world today the forest that inhabits millions of different species of animals is being torn down for human settlement each day. Earth's rainforests are home to over 50 percent of the world's species and nearly 80,000 acres of rainforest are destroyed each day (Scientific American). Although there are thousands of animals species that are endangered, the tiger is one of the most important species that comes to mind.…

While one tends to have the general idea as to what’s happening around the world, it isn’t until someone comes around and tells you exactly what’s going on that you become truly aware. This thought was the first to cross my mind while I was reading The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert. Before getting into the details of this book review, I would like to preface it by saying that before beginning this class I had an idea of what was happening around the globe. I was not so uninformed as to say that I didn’t know the climate was changing and species were gradually disappearing, but rather I was unaware as to just how quickly this was taking place. I can say that in the back of my mind there has…

The quaternary extinction event happened about 10,000–40,000 years ago. This even is when megafaunal animals went extinct. This event saw the extinction of more than 178 species. Megafaunals are defined as “A term generally used to refer to the largest animals present within an ecosystem, most often used with respect to the array of large-bodied species which suffered extinction during the Quaternary. A strict definition refers to animal species weighing more than 44kg(Surovell,3)”. Megafaunals lived around the time of the ice age. Megafaunal animals include woolly mammoths, sabertooth cats and giant ground sloths. There are two theories as to why they went extinct. The first theory is that they went…

Scientists distinguish that mass-extinction rate is higher than the background extinction rate. Mass extinction effects everyone. Humans are relaying on other species for food, shelter, heat, and medicine. It is wide spread event that washout the majority of living plants and animals. (Enzor, 2013) Background Extinction rate are normal and is distinguish when the last individual of the species in the wild dies. Individuals in captivity do not count toward member of an extinct or living species. These species go extinct because not all life can be sustained on earth and species cannot survive.…

According to Buchanan, all species on the earth are entering the sixth great extinction event. A report authored by scientists at Stanford, Princeton and Berkeley universities, found that vertebrates were vanishing at a rate 114 times faster than normal. Gerardo Ceballos, lead author of the research, said "If it is allowed to continue, life would take many millions of years to recover and our species itself would likely disappear early on”(qtd in. Buchanan 3). They also found that there are some species which are…

Mass extinctions are very important events to the living organism. When mass extinction happens, it will create huge impact toward the world, negative or positive. For the conservation biologist, they usually think this is a great loss. On the other hand, from the evolutionary perspective, mass extinction could be something good and bad at the same time. Mass extinction would end a lineages and the unique genetic vitiation will be eliminate (Jablonski, 2001). The result of this factor is the loss of the species and it might have some value toward the humankind, such as the medical or economic value. Also, if the extinct species still exist, it might make a different in the world, such as human no longer the most intelligent species in the world.…
