Chapter 4: Endpoints
1- Look at the proposed planetary boundaries in Table 4.1. Choose one of the Earth System Processes and find two articles you trust related to the process, its current state and predictions for the future.
1- Earth enters sixth extinction phase with many species – including our own – labelled 'the walking dead’ by Rose Troup Buchanan.
2- Accelerating extinction risk from climate change by Mark C. Urban.
2- Write a summary for each article that states the conclusions and recommendations.
2a- First article:
According to Buchanan, all species on the earth are entering the sixth great extinction event. A report authored by scientists at Stanford, Princeton and Berkeley universities, found that vertebrates were vanishing at a rate 114 times faster than normal. Gerardo Ceballos, lead author of the research, said "If it is allowed to continue, life would take many millions of years to recover and our species itself would likely disappear early on”(qtd in. Buchanan 3). They also found that there are some species which are …show more content…
Urban synthesized published studies in order to estimate a global mean extinction rate. Results suggest that extinction risks will accelerate with future global temperatures, threatening up to one in six species under current policies. Extinction risks were highest in South America, Australia, and New Zealand, and risks did not vary by taxonomic group. Realistic assumptions about extinction debt and dispersal capacity substantially increased extinction risks. The global community urgently needs to adopt strategies that limit further climate change that would cause a lot of species to become extinct if we want to avoid an acceleration of global extinctions (Urban
