African American culture in the United States refers to the cultural contributions of Americans African descent to the culture of the United States, either as part of or distinct from American culture. The distinct identity of African American culture is rooted in the historical experience of the African American people. The culture is both distinct and enormously influential to American culture as a whole. African-American culture is rooted in Africa. It is a blend of chiefly sub-Saharan African and Sahelean cultures. Although slavery greatly restricted the ability of Americans of African descent to practice their cultural traditions, many practices, values, and beliefs survived and over time have modified or blended with European American culture. There are some facets of African American culture that were accentuated by the slavery period. The result is a unique and dynamic culture that has had and continues to have a profound impact on mainstream American culture.…
In the 19th century the “Victorian” or “genteel” culture was brought in from England when Victoria ruled. The genteel reformers took charge to inculcate characteristics such as moral integrity, self-control, sober earnestness, industriousness. Forming an alliance with between the “high” and “middle” classes, the genteel culture took its place as the “official” culture in America. The transition of the American culture was brought on by a new generation rebelling and becoming “impatient with the intellectual and emotional restraints, stifled by the insulating comforts of genteel middle-class existence” (6). These limitations brought out many changes in Afro-American music, violent sports, and a new wave of literature breaking many of the genteel…
Culture is the arts and other creations of individual’s intellectual accomplishment regarding a lot of feelings, customs, and exercises. They say “never judge a book by its cover”, but your average person does it on a daily. People look at your appearance and try to say which culture you come from. On a daily basis, I have people come up to me and ask me am I Jamaican; and am shocked when I say no. The two cultures, I have chosen to compare and contrast are African Americans and Jamaicans. Both cultures are very unique and may have some similarities, but they are very different from one another.…

Cultural identity is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's self-conception and self-perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture. In this way, cultural identity is both characteristic of the individual but also of the culturally identical group of members sharing the same cultural identity. Cultural identity is similar to and overlaps with identity politics. My culture identity, as I know it as is African American. My culture can be seen in food, religion, language, the community, family structure, the individual, music, dance, art, workmanship, and could be summed up as the typical level. Typical, on the grounds that faith assumes a big part in our day by day lives through tune, request to God, adulate and venerate. When I'm happy I depend on my…
When I came to the United States in 2010, I was teased for being African not by white students but by black Americans; they were always trying to play with my intelligence. Many African Americans are ignorant about African immigrants; they think we want to kill them so that we can eat them. I remember back in high school, a black student once asked me if I had seen a Lion or a Tiger. I told her, “Yes, we all lived together in our tree house.” In Africa, we admire the American struggle for civil rights, but when some of us came to America and discovered that black is not so beautiful, we insist on maintaining a separate identity. African immigrants and African Americans have shared complexion, but their cultures are diverse because of food tradition,…
The article continued on to illustrate the plethora of generational issues that African American communities are continuously subjected to when it comes to poor school systems, crime infested communities, and lack of access to quality education. African Americans who reside in these communities have been there for generations struggling with persistent poverty concerns. The issue is that the government has set in place numerous of zoning restrictions in efforts to keep the Africain American communities from expanding in order to confine them to one particular area. In efforts to ensure African American communities would continue to be segregated from White communities the government devised a plan to build intersate highways to act as barriers…
“My culture is my identity and personality. It gives me spiritual, intellectual and emotional distinction from others, and I am proud of it”. African-American culture, also known as black culture, in the United States it refers to the cultural contributions of African Americans to the culture of the United States, either as part of or distinct from American culture. The African American, and also my own culture are made up of a lot of things. In common with some and very different from others. La mayoría de la gente no entiende esto, debido a la falta de conocimientos acerca de otras lenguas y culturas. Many will not understand this statement, due to their lack of education of different languages and cultures. The United States is one of the few countries not interested in the diversity of cultures around the world. People are mainly focused on their personal lives rather than the alarming ignorance around this country. Authorities are causing kids to be ignorant by the way they are raising them. Kids are expected to learn about the world and its history without being able to experience these things. In almost every country in Europe, children know at least two or more languages. This knowledge is not only gained in a classroom,…
The first page of the text Chemical Dependency by McNeece and DiNitto states that ethnicity and culture have been called the strongest determinants of drinking pattern in a society. The two ethnicities or cultures I chose to write about are Native Indian and African Americans.…
If my roommate had made such statements about Africa out of ignorance, I would not be surprised. Many Americans have preconceived ideas about what Africa is like, despite never being immersed in its culture. This is perpetuated through media outlets such as movies, magazines, etc. in popular culture. As outsiders, we make generalizations and think that Africa is a land of starvation, desert, poverty, and many other negative aspects. However, our thoughts could not be more wrong. Africa is a wonderful place, but is under negative judgment by many people who lack the knowledge to understand the continent. Many of these notions can be disproved with just a small amount of research. This kind of judgment is simply not fair, and Africa deserves…
In America, I believe culture does and does not define us. There are many reasons to believe that. Culture does define who we are because culture can be diverse. Culture does not define who we are because some parts in culture, the individual might not want that part of tradition to define them. In America, there are many different cultures with different traditions and races. Along with different types of cultures, there are some races that don’t get along well as others. These racial issues should be taught in school.…
