The American Dream is often misleading because it makes one believe that if they obtain the fame, fortune, and a new beginning, it will bring happiness; only to realize it causes one pain. The American Dream is often deemed as the main goal of the American culture, and is the one of the many reasons why people come to America today. In the American Classic The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby, a man of many mysteries, is madly in love with Daisy, a woman from the past, who is now married to Tom Buchanan. Gatsby goes through his life often trying being popular and fit with the social norm. He has so much self-respect, that he is blinded by the fact that no one really knows who he is. While on his journey, Gatsby has an affair with Daisy, while she is still married to Tom. This leads to an argument between Tom and Gatsby, and Daisy finally admits that she would rather be with Tom. With this news Gatsby is devastated and shocked that Daisy would not have chosen him. While on his back from the city, Daisy accidentally runs over a lady and keeps on driving. Gatsby who is still madly in love with Daisy, takes the blame and is killed in his own backyard. Willy a man who is nearing the age of death, constantly wants to be successful and believes that if one works as hard as they can, one will obtain their dream. Willy who worked as a businessman is fired, because of his old age and his craziness pushed his own dreams onto Biff and Happy to become rich and famous. Willy gets this idea from his big brother Ben, who struck rich in Africa when he found diamonds.
