The American Dream, a dream that all Americans have, for everything to be equal, and to have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is the typical American dream and the overall outline of the American Dream but everyone’s can be significantly different. In the book of mice and men the lesson you learn is that just having an American Dream is what shapes your life and gives you the purpose to do things. Whereas in The Great Gatsby the lesson is more along the lines of showing you that the American Dream is not all that it seems to be. These two books teach you two completely different things but both things are about the American Dream. In The Great Gatsby the theme about the American Dream is that it is not all that it seems to
be. Gatsby plans his American Dream around this dream girl named Daisy that he has loved all these years. When Gatsby meets Daisy yes, he is attracted to her and still loves her but she is not all that he expected. Gatsby accomplishes the part of his American Dream where he wants to be rich and he fulfills his own responsibilities but he has included another human as a part of his dream. In the end Gatsby actually does not fulfill the part of his dream with her in it and even gets himself killed because he took the blame for something that she did. Gatsby’s American Dream in the end got him killed, it did not lead him to great happiness like everyone thinks it will. In Of Mice and Men the overall theme shows you that the American Dream is what shapes your life and gives you the purpose to do things. In Of Mice and Men there are two guys named Lennie and George, George and Lennie want to own their own ranch one day and have a place of their own. Their American Dream happens to be more typical in this time and lots of people do want this success. In the end George has to kill Lennie and they do not accomplish their dream because they no longer have each other. The point of this was that their dream is actually what kept them together and created a bond between them, no they did not accomplish it but they spent their lives together trying to which created a friendship between them.
