They pulled up the line to find an enormous fish on the hook. The eldest hunter leaned over the hole to thank the spirits for the food. He had just finished speaking when, to their surprise, the water spoke, “No thanks needed” it said. Then a gigantic sand shark flopped onto the ice. The three hunters licked their lips out of hunger. It spoke, “Please do not eat me, for I am the reason you have this fine fish.” Then it jumped back into the water. Day after day the hunters came back again and again to have mounds of fish dumped upon them. One day the sand shark asked for something in return. “I ask only one thing, that you make me the symbol of your tribe.” it said. As a child I was psyched up, I couldn’t wait to look at all the pumpkins and carve it as a dinosaur. I literally was obsessed with dinosaurs until the age of nine. We parked our 1997 Corolla and started to walk to all the bright orange pumpkins. Something was strange from the looks of this place. All the pumpkins had white little tags on them but they weren’t dollar signs like you would expect. They all had words on them, I was only six at the time so I couldn’t read that much. A few words I read out loud from one of the white little tags but struggled to read the whole sentence. My mom was confused too, why would all the pumpkins have stupid little quotes on them she murmured. We soon found out shortly that this was at our advantage and not a disappointment. A tall black man with dreads came out of the trailer by the pumpkin patch and walked up to us. He asked “What can I help you with folks?” My mother asked him about the pumpkins and the quotes on them. He laughed, since it’s three days before Halloween were having a little contest. I looked up at him and…

A strange creature which is the Faun suddenly appears in her room claiming that she could become a princess if she completes some tasks that he would assign to her. The Faun seems to be like a half goat half human and it is a very creepy looking creature. He gives her magical chalk to make a magical door on the stone wall and it actually works. The door opens and she enters a medieval styled hallway which leads to a long table with a feast on it. The half goat creature had told her to not indulge in any of the food that would be on the table but since she hadn’t had dinner yet she decides to take a bite out of a grape. At the end of the table there’s another creature that looks like a mix between a ghost and a mummy. This creature is the Pale Man and was completely still until Ofelia took the bite out of the grape and then it didn’t take it very well. It got up from the table and chased after Ofelia as if it wanted to harm her but she escaped from it by drawing another magical door on the roof and climbing out of that surreal hall. The Pale Man represents her father at the dinner table just a few minutes before and how his character is. He’s a mean and selfish person and that’s why he got mad when she got something from his feast. After she got back to her room the Faun scolded her for not following his instructions and this represents how everyone is always…

The house is decorated with streamers on the walls and paper skeletons taped to the bathroom doors, there is a cake on the counter, everyone is getting ready to head out for a couple hours [or a hour, depending if I am still willing to keep going or not], the sun is almost set, and everybody is dressed up and ready to start the hunt tonight. If you couldn’t already tell, there are 2 special occasions today[but for most people it is only one special occasion], the day that kids walk upon the streets while dressed up in either monster costumes or as their favorite cartoon/movie/TV character and go door to door, asking for candy at the houses with the lights on. The other occasion, however, is one that can happen any day of the year, one that is celebrated for one or more people at a single time[but only usually only one at a time] and everyone gives the person who is celebrated on this day presents and afterwards[or before] everyone eats cake and ice cream[They don’t always eat ice cream though, and I think pie is better than cake for this occasion]. I like to call this time of year cavity season.…

The Scandinavian Folklore consists of a huge variety of creatures, good or evil, which have frightened people for centuries. They were often meant to scare children, but even today they are essential and important to the modern northern society. In the 1890s, something changed in the way common Scandinavians saw themselves and their culture. They looked back in time to rediscover their old myths and legends; folklore which had been forgotten because of the coming of Christianity. It was a time when people feared nature, because we were becoming more industrialized. The forests, the mountains, and the…
