In this analytic essay I have worked with the text “The Baddest Dog in Harlem” and analyzing it down to get a better understanding of the story.
“The Baddest Dog in Harlem” is a short story written by Walter Dean Myers. The short story is written in “I person” and the target group of the story is teenagers and people in their twenties. The story is primarily set to get out to black people, as the story takes places in a ghetto society. The story is not only set out to black people, but white people as well. White people can gain knowledge and a better insight of the black man’s life in the ghetto society, where police brutality is a very discussing subject. Mr. Lynch: He is an old man who enjoys telling unknown stories to the people around him.
Tommy: All we get to know about Tommy is that he is a fan of the boxer Ali and can take a discussion about boxing.
Pedro: He likes the boxer Roberto Duran and is open for a discussion about boxing as well.
Mrs. Davis: She is an old woman and is very concerned about her son. She is often yelling at him when there is some kind of trouble.
Mamie: She is a worker in the restaurant and might be having some kind of relationship with the main character.
Flood: Manger in the restaurant and is really liking food. When he goes to cover, he brings food with him.
Mary Brown: Owner of apparently the baddest dog in Harlem who was shot by police officers.
Arab: Is the suspect in the episode and is the reason why the police officers are shooting up the apartments.

The scene is set on 145th street in Harlem, which is home to thousands of black people. As there is that many black people living in Harlem, and many without jobs, it goes under the term “ghetto.”
The short story can draw parallels to Bruce Springsteen’s song American Skin (41 shots). In both the story and the song, it is clear that it can be dangerous to live in these ghettos in New York. You should not trust a lot of people and especially not the police. Police brutality in the ghettos is a big subject and many cops are abusing their power. In the story, a young boy is shot and killed in his apartment for no reason at all. He was watching television when he heard noise outside and naturally looked out the window.
The song American Skin (41 shots) is referring to a young man named Amadou Diallo who died in 1999 after being shot by four plain-clothes NYPD officers.
The officers believes Diallo to match the description of a large serial rapist and (according to the officers) loudly identifies themselves and order Diallo to “show his hands.” Diallo then reaches into his pocket and take out his
