The Baroque period is arguably the most revolutionary musical period in history. This period was used to describe the Western European music. This period contained tonality, instrumentation, and more complex compositions. This period also brought forth many famous musical composers, such as Vivaldi, Handel, and Bach. Most of their works are still used to this day to make compositions. Baroque music originated in Italy and that is where the Italian terms for forms come from. Some of the musical forms used are cantata, sonata, opera, and concerto. Cantata is to be sung. Bach used cantata to influence the range in his counterparts. Sonata is to be played. Before this period most eras used polyphony, in the Baroque period composers started to use monophony, a single melody. Instruments and voice went 50/50, Instruments that were used were the violin, viola, lute, and viol. The Baroque period also used dramatic contrast. Instruments and timbre were played in many compositions. Sounds would change from soft to loud. Also, they would alternate ensemble to solo. This period also focused on instrumentation, which instrument would best fit the piece. The Classical period was also used to describe Western music and secular music. The Classical Period also had many famous composers. Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn to name a few. This period had many musical forms, such as, chamber music, opera, orchestra. The Classical Period had many characteristics. This period also focused on instrumentation. Most of the instruments used were found in orchestras. Instruments such as pianos and organs were used. In symphony orchestras, instruments in percussion, woodwind, and strings were also used. Instruments dominated this era, and the rhythm was predictable. With the use of so many instruments the range expanded and homophony played a role. Sonata form was also used, it has three parts, exposition, development, and recapitulation.
