The Beloved Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan was a man of honor and understanding. He was either a man with great integrity or a really great actor. Either way, the people of America loved him and always looked at him with endearment. He reminded them that this was a simple America, one that was strong and could overcome anything. He allured them with the hope of becoming an example of freedom for those who did not share the opportunity. During his campaign, he repetitively said “Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem." ("Iran Hostage Crisis", 2013.)
Attempted Assassination
The assassination of Reagan happened on Monday March 30, 1981. The event happened only 69 days into his first term as president. As he was leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. where there was a small crowd of people allowed to stand around the corner of where Reagan would be exiting the building. John Hinckley Jr., the shooter, happened to be one of those spectators. As the President was on his way to the limousine, Hinckley saw his opportunity, firing six shots within 1 ½ minutes. James Bradey, White House Press Secretary, received one shot to the forehead while Thomas Delahanty, District of Columbia police officer, was struck by a bullet in the back of his neck. Timothy McCarthy, a Secret Service agent, was shot in his abdomen and Ronald Reagan was pushed into the limousine by Special Agent in Charge Jerry Parr ("Attempted Assassination of Ronald Reagan", 2013.) As soon as the President was removed from the area, Parr noticed a bullet had grazed the President’s left arm. While heading to the White House, Parr saw immense bleeding from the President and noted the frothy red blood when he coughed. The motorcade was redirected to George Washington University Hospital.
