The Black Cat: A Reflection of Edgar Allen Poe

Some people choose to display their life through a page turning autobiography, others an

award winning blockbuster film. But, there are some people who showcase their life story, the good and the bad, in their work. One of the most wellknown people to do this was none other than the demented and ingenious Edgar Allen Poe. The tragedy of his life bled through many of his works, particularly
The Black Cat.
Elements of Poe’s life are hidden deep within the words of the fictional story
.
Although the story may be fictional, the story still masks the events that occurred in Poe’s life. From his fatal attraction to alcohol all the way to his encounter with the spirit of perverseness, Edgar Allen Poe tells of his tragedies behind a mask whose title is, The
Black Cat.

The fictional narrative is based upon the narrator’s situation with the effects of alcohol

abuse. His actions with this alcohol has affected his whole life. Instead of seeing the narrator himself needs help, he blames it on the black cat. The Black Cat is symbolic for all the wrongs in the narrator’s life, a scapegoat. The cat is maltreated every time something goes wrong with the narrator, it is the outcome of his alcohol abuse. As it is explained in the story, the narrator was the victim of a “Fiend Intemperance” (Poe 6). By the day he grew more moody, more irritable, and more regardless of the feelings of others (Poe 6). He knows that his excessive indulgence of

alcohol is very impactful on his life, for he has seen it and admitted to it himself. He morphs into a completely different persons when he consumes this substance. He takes on a different personality, one that is completely different from his animal loving and affectionate self that he used to be (Poe 2). This shows only a piece of Edgar Allan Poe’s life. The problems of alcoholism and insanity are recurring themes in Poe’s literary works. One can say that “The Black Cat,” one of Poe’s short stories, portrays much of the author’s own views on his substance abuse problems and mental illness. The unnamed narrator from “The Black Cat,” struggles with his addiction to alcohol and his hatred for two cats become prevailing. The narrator states, however, that he was never like this before he loved animals, “never was so happy as when feeding and caressing them.” (Poe, 3). The narrator takes on a cat and cares for it, however, as his drinking problem progressed, he states, “I grew day by day more moody… my disease grew upon me.” (Poe, 4). After a night out drinking, he decides to cut out one of the cat’s eyes and ultimately, kills the cat. Later, another cat strangely identical to the first cat with one eye comes around and as the narrator tries to kill the second cat he ends up killing his wife instead. He buries the body of his wife and the second cat behind a wall and police later hear the cat calling out from inside the wall. In relation to Poe’s life, Poe was known to love cats and had a female cat named Catterina (Mercier). The killing of the first cat relates to Poe’s own destruction of the things he loved and desired due to alcoholism. He lost his job in 1837 due to his drinking and feuding with other editors (Edgar Allan Poe, Encyclo.) The killing of an innocent wife can closely relate to Poe’s views of women in his own life, through the deaths of both his mother figures and then eventually his wife. Poe writes about women who carry a unique beauty to them. The women are compassionate to the men they…

. . . Mr. Poe is at once the most discriminating, philosophical, and fearless critic upon imaginative works who has written in America. It may be that we should qualify our remark a little, and say that he might be, rather than that he always is, for he seems sometimes to mistake his phial of prussic-acid for his inkstand.” — (James Russell Lowell, “Edgar Allan Poe,” Graham’s Magazine, February 1845.) Although he was heavily criticized, many seemed to view him as genius. “That perfection of horror which abounds in his writings, has been unjustly attributed to some moral defect in the man. But I perceive not why the competent critic should fall into this error. Of all authors, ancient or modern, Poe has given us the least of himself in his works. He wrote as an artist. He intuitively saw what Schiller has so well expressed, that it is an universal phenomenon of our nature that the mournful, the fearful, even the horrible, allures with irresistible…

Leading him to attempting suicide after his wife died. Instead of killing himself, he took his agony out in his writings. Edgar Allan Poe wrote approximately sixty-nine stories and poems. Family members, classmates, depression and disasters influenced Poe to use alcohol. The possibilities of Poe being an alcoholic increased because of the environment and the society in which he grew up (Poe, Drugs and Alcohol 7). His father, David Poe Jr, was known for being a heavy drinker. Some accredit Poe’s abuse of alcohol to a genetic predisposition, which is concurrent with our up-to-date understanding of alcoholism. Depression and alcoholism started to appear in the passing of his late 20’s into his early 30’s. His addiction to alcohol started while he was attending the University of Virginia and was introduced to it by classmates (Poe, Drugs and Alcohol 9). During this time Poe was faced with heart problems and brain lesions which weaken him emotional and physically. He would in turn self-medicate with alcohol to take away his…

Drinking is not the best choice. When someone drinks alcohol they act like someone else, just like in the story. “Suddenly, I was not myself anymore. Someone else was in my body: someone evil, and mad with drink” (Poe1). “Often he tried to jump on my knees. I want to murder him when he did this, but I did not” (Poe 2). This all connects to the claim because it is about his drinking problem. The first support means that he is not himself when he is drunk. He said that he’s someone else. The second example is saying that he wanted to murder his cat but he did not for some reason. It was because at that time he was not…

Edgar Allan Poe’s influence on American literature was nothing short of great; not only was he the creator of the detective story and the horror thriller, but he also influenced many great writers, among those William Faulkner and Fyodor Dostoevsky. While Poe is best known for his horror thrillers, being the creator of that particular genre, he has also fashioned two other literary genres, like the detective and the science fiction genre. Throughout his life, Poe read, reviewed, and critiqued many books for various magazines and papers. Poe did not hesitate to attack what he deemed inferior. “Is purely too imbecile to merit an extended critique,” he once wrote of a novel. Because of his readiness to attack what he believed to be unworthy, Poe helped set high standards for American literature (Meltzer 64).…
