On a cool, rainy night while driving home with her family, Mrs. Tuohy spots a young man walking along the road. Tuohy pleaded with Coach Burt Cotton to let Michael on his football team. The coach realized quickly that Michael seemed to lack some key knowledge of the game. However, with Mrs. Tuohy’s insistence and help, they honed in on Michael’s protective instincts and Michael quickly became a very valuable part of the team. Coach fought hard to get Michael admitted into the Christian school that both S.J. and Collins Tuohy attend. Michael’s grades and poor school record showed he had never been a good student but Coach Cotton persuaded the school officials to ignore the grades and background and admit Michael based on the school’s Christian values. The school officials agreed to give him a chance but stated that Michael cannot play football until his grades improve. The Tuohys hired a tutor who dedicated her time to help Michael to succeed in school and he was soon able to begin playing football. The coach then pushed Michael harder than most during each practice. Michael met and exceeded all demands and gave 100% each and every time. The Coach worked diligently to build the player and character that would help Michael play football not only at the college level, but at a professional level in the future. Coach Cotton also helped bring Michael to the attention of college recruiters which in the end, led to the college and profession career for Michael that Coach Cotton knew Michael
