For example, Coach White is the one who takes the responsibility for the first loss of the team. He could of blamed the team, or he could of gotten furious at them for not winning. Instead, he chose to take the responsibility by himself. He never reinforces the team to emulate the other teams. Instead, he tells the team that it is his fault for not training them on hills, and he even finds a place with hills for them to practice. He also takes the responsibility for having the Diaz family in their team by adjusting their practice time to not overlap with the Diaz’s job as pickers. A team will never succeed without the care of a coach, and Coach White is able to provide the care that the team needed. For instance, the Diaz’s father tells the Diaz siblings to drop out of the cross country team because it interferes with their job as pickers. In order for the cross country team to avoid dispersion, Coach White volunteers to pick in the fields until he is saturated with sweat. Coach White did not have to help out in the fields, but he chose to because he cares for the Diaz siblings. When the McFarland team wins their first game, Coach White takes them to the beach for the first time. Taking the team to the beach was not a necessary job as a coach, but Coach White chose to take them because he cared for them. The care that Coach White had for the team brought them one step closer to being champions.
The people surrounding one’s life will definitely have a big impact in one’s future. The McFarland cross country team was able to win the state finals because they had an amazing coach like Jim White. For every team, an influential coach is necessary.
