The movie the blindside is based on a true story of Michael Oher, an African-American teenager who is taken in and eventually adopted by the Tuohy’s, a wealthy white family.
Michael has no idea who his father is and his mother is a drug addict. Michael had barely any form of education and few skills to help him learn. Leigh Ann Tuohy soon takes charge, as it is her nature, ensuring that Michael has every opportunity to succeed. When he expresses an interest in football, she goes all out to help him. They not only provide him with a loving home, but they also hire a tutor to help him improve his grades to the point where he would qualify for an athletic scholarship. He then graduated with honors and got a full ride scholarship to play football at Old Miss College. Michael Oher was the first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL
draft.
Bringing a child into your home and loving them like your own is life changing to you and the child. It is telling an adopted child you love them and their now a part of you and your family. It is very hard to adopt an older child who has already had somewhat of a childhood and it is especially hard to show the child that you care, and are willing to sacrifice things to better that child’s needs. In the movie the blindside Michael felt extremely out of place, not only because he was a large black man and the family was wealthy and white but he felt like they only took him in just to do a good deed. Like most other families they only take in foster children just to get money from the government. The Tuohy’s took in Michael not looking for any kind of financial reward at the end, they simply saw a young boy in need of help and they came to his rescue and provided a stable family home for him. The Tuohy’s proved that when a family adopts a child, the gender or the race should not change their perspective about the child. How they loved and communicated with Michael is what brought him closer to the family.
