An old proverb goes “The past will always come back to haunt you”. Which means, that no matter how much you try to hide something from your past it will somehow surface again. It is only a matter of time. This is a very fitting proverb when talking about the short story “The Blue Film”.
“The blue film” is a short story about a single evening in the life of a middle aged Europe-an couple. It is a simple chronological story. The novel has a strong marriage and divorcement theme. The story takes place in the middle of the 20 century, in an exotic East Asian country like Thailand. The story is told in 3rd person view with focus on the way Mr. Carter experiences his evening. If the story were told from Mrs. Carter point of view, the story would have been different. Maybe Mr. Carter would be described as a boring depressing middle-aged man.
From the very beginning of the novel, it is clear to the reader that there are several problems in the marriage between Mr. and Mrs. Carter. The opening lines reveal some kind of discussion or quarrel, and though neither of the parts is shouting at the other, it is clear to the reader that the relationship has come to somewhat of a dead end. They discus the fact that the trip haven’t been as expected. Throughout the text, the problems in the relation-ship are revealed to the reader, showing how the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Carter is in danger. They live very separate lives and it seems as both of them only is stay-ing in the relationship simply because of the habit of it. The love and devotion that might have been between them is disappeared
This lack of love and affection is another consistent theme. Mr. Carter can’t forget “the actress from the blue film” - the only girl he ever loved, his “love of his life”. But she dis-appeared and never came back, and the same is true for his love-live. The surprising and unexpected meeting with their old pornographic movie brings back nice memories.
