The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
The Boy In the Striped Pajamas, is a book about two children that were enemies, but at the the end, they became friends. Throughout the book, I describe Bruno as playful ,and smart.

I described Bruno as playful, because he loved to play with his old friends before he moved to his new house in Berlin. Once he got to his new house in Berlin, he didn't have no one to play with, than he asked Pavel to create a swing with an old tire. Once Pavel was done with the swing, he started swinging by himself since his sister Gretel didn't want to play with him. Once Bruno met Shmuel for the first time, he didn't know he was a Jewish. The next day Bruno wanted to play checkers with Shmuel, but Shmuel said that it was a very bad idea, because if the soldiers were to see him, Shmuel would of been in trouble.

When Bruno heard his parents arguing about how the Jewish people were being treated, Bruno thought that Pavel was wearing pajamas, because he was a Jewish as well as Shmuel.

Bruno is thoughtful, because everytime he sees Shmuel and the Jewish working on the house, Bruno thought right away, why wasn't Shmuel helping the rest of the Jewish working on the house instead of being here all alone. Bruno directly thought why was Shmuel in prison if he had the same birthday and age as Bruno.

Bruno is a smart guy, because he loved to read books with his sister Gretel. The next day, Bruno went to visit Shmuel, but what Shmuel didn't know, was that Bruno had a shovel to dig a hole, and get in prison with Shmuel. Not everyone will agree with me, but Bruno is smarter than Shmuel, because Bruno used to have friends back in Poland, so Bruno learned lots of new things from them. Bruno taught Shmuel how to play fun games such as Checkers

How can two best friends simultaneously be enemies? John Boyne answers this question in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. He writes a tale about a Nazi commandant’s son who befriends another boy. They soon become best friends. Everyday Bruno the commandant’s son, visits Shmuel, a concentration camp inmate. Since Bruno’s father works for Hitler and Shmuel and his family are trapped by Hitler, this makes things difficult on the boys. Instead of being able to play with each other, like Bruno wants, they are separated by a fence. Bruno and Shmuel have these secret meetings every day and Bruno’s mother is also having secret meetings. However, her meetings are with the young lieutenant who works for Hitler. Although this is not clearly stated in the book, one can infer that she is having an affair with the man. Eventually, the commandant sends the lieutenant away. After a while of visiting each other Bruno learns that he is moving. As a last adventure, the two devise a plan that involves Bruno crossing the fence. When Bruno finally crosses, a herd of Nazi army officials rush a group of Jews and Bruno into an air tight room. He is only nine-years-old so he is clueless about the…

Eight-year-old Bruno and his family move to the countryside because his father was in charge of a concentration camp in Germany called Auschwitz. One day when Bruno was exploring an area that his parents said was out of bounds he came a cross a fence where a boy his age was on the other side. Bruno quickly becomes friends with this boy, Shmuel, and day after day Bruno visits him at the “farm”. Shmuel decided to tell Bruno that his father is missing and Bruno vows to help him find him. The next day the boys meet at the fence and Bruno changes into the striped pajamas that Shmuel provided and then climbs under the fence into the “farm”. This scene is very touching as the two characters drink wine and snack on mozzarella. "Let's forget everything, let's get drunk," says Antonio to his son. "We'll eat and be happy for now." Through the food, drinks, and cheerful songs, the two try to forget their problems of the day. This is a scene that everyone can relate to; when you are having a bad day or a bad time in your life, you want to go out and just forget, even if it's for a moment. Bruno keeps looking self consciously at a rich young boy dressed in black who sits near by. This young boy returns his glances with a snotty look. "Eat, eat, don't worry," Antonio says to his son. This scene demonstrates that even in childhood, it is hard to escape from the current conditions. As we saw in the earlier scenes, Bruno is responsible for many things at a very young age. He helps his father clean his bike, closes the window for the baby, and remembers to say goodbye to his mother. Bruno is a character of the middle class. He is not as hopeless as the two children panhandling on the street; one who receives a swift kick from Antonio's fellow employee. However Bruno is not as well off as the young boy at the restaurant. He is stuck in the middle, which is very frustrating because slipping into poverty seems so easy to do while becoming well off seems so far…

What happens in the end of the novel,is that when Bruno moves somewhere else because his mother did not think living in Berlin was an appropriate place for Bruno and Gretel to be raised their mother did not want them to be mislead about what they have seen outside their windows, but of course Bruno had actually seen something totally different for himself when he was at the concentration camp to see his new friend shmuel. The characters Bruno and shmuel seem to change when they did not agree on certain things for instinct Bruno thought his father was a good man because he figured that his father had great power over the area they were in and shmuel thought that people like Bruno's father were cruel, rude and disrespectful.Bruno never understood…

Bruno is described as creative in this novel because when he let it slip to his sister that because of the rain he hadn’t been able to go and see Shmuel for a few days he was quickly able to make up an excuse that Shmuel was his imaginative friend: “I have a new friend,” he began. “A new friend that I go see everyday. And he’ll be waiting for me by now. But you cant tell anyone.” “Why Not?” “Because he’s an imaginary friend,” said Bruno trying his best to look embarrassed, just like Lieutenant Kotler had when he had became trapped in his story about his father in Switzerland. “We play together everyday” (page 155)…

This means that he is still innocent and naïve and, as a result, there are many things that are implied rather than stated outright because Bruno cannot comprehend the true atrocities being committed. There are also simple mistakes he makes, such as thinking that Auschwitz is pronounced ‘Out-With’ and that the Fuehrer is pronounced ‘Fury’. This innocence and lack of understanding allows him to be a good and happy person even though he is so close to a concentration camp but also means he does nothing to help the situation and eventually is killed at a very young age. This also helped create a feeling of sympathy towards Bruno, but was taken too far at many stages when I just felt he was ignorant, and should have tried harder to understand his situation.…

At the time of war, Bruno was completely oblivious to the atrocities around him. He is unaware that his father his a Nazi Commander. This relates to Zusak’s The Book Thief since Bruno does not know that his father is a Nazi Commander and he would be too young to understand, and Liesel’s parents were communists, a concept she didn’t understand either because of her age, so they were both in danger. Bruno says: “My father’s a soldier, but not one that takes peoples clothes away”. (Boyne, 114). Even though Bruno knows his dad is a soldier, he does not want to believe that his dad is the cause of this wrongfulness. Little does Bruno know that it is unfortunately true and his dad is the one putting him in danger. Throughout all the horrors going on around them, Shmuel and Bruno share a certain childlike innocence, even though Shmuel is a prisoner and has certainly seen horrific sights. His parents who do not want him to know about the horrors of the Holocaust, on the other hand, carefully protect Bruno. This relates to Zusak’s The Book Thief because Liesel and Rudy are both young when the horrific events of the Holocaust are happening, and they are all unsure of what is going on. Bruno and Shmuel possess innocence just like Liesel and Rudy’s because their friendship is apart from the common order that both inhabit. Bruno's friendship with Shmuel is one in…

Even though they are a more traditional family, the lack of connection between members is ever present. The novel is told in third person narrative style through the perspective of Bruno, with snippets of others opinions occasionally mentioned. This perspective is therefore skewed due to his age. As Bruno grows older he is included more into the family affairs but is still unaware of the harshness his father inflicts on the Jewish people on the other side of the fence. This is evident in the quotation “There aren’t any good soldiers.” repeated Shmuel. “Except Father” repeated Bruno. Which emphasises not only Bruno’s respect for his father but his naivety and…

In Dickinson's poems, there is a sense of disconnection with society that the poet experiences due to her isolation and seclusion from the world. Similarly, Bruno, in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, experiences the same sense of disconnection due to his unsurity over what is right or wrong. He feels out of place and confused throughout the film as a result of his youth as well as his lack of knowledge about the hostile situation in the world. Also, where Dickinson regards her relationship with nature as the most dominant one in her life as depicted in "What mystery pervades a well", Bruno does the same in reference to his relationship with the Jew child, Schmal. Like nature, Schmal is an enigmatic character which Bruno does not seem to fully connect throughout the film, largely due to physical barriers such as the electric fence and mental factors like the judgemental character of Lt. Kotler and his father. Lastly, Dickinson realises her importance and place in the world due to her seclusion. Likewise, for the…

is not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything.”-Muhammad Ali. Bruno and Shmuel might of been two different religions, but that didn’t mean they were different. They were still both human and two little, nine year old boys whose lives were different because of their religion. Bruno wasn’t taught to make friends with anyone who was the same at him, he was taught to make friends with any he liked or with someone who understood him. Bruno learned throughout the book that everyone believes in different things, but we are all the same in the end so why were the people in the striped pajamas different from the people in the…

In the novel Boy in The Striped Pyjamas, prejudice and discrimination are shown to have many negative effects on many of the characters such as Bruno, Shumel, Father, Mother and Kotler. In my essay I will explore this idea in relation to the novel. Discrimination, (or in other words negatively putting someone down but not physical hurting or touching them in anyway) is taken place in Boy in The Striped Pyjamas by many different people such as Gretel, by following Kotler’s decisions Gretel is discriminating because she is supporting the Germans belief. Prejudice on the other hand, (is another word for negative physical contact such as kicking, hitting or even killing) in Boy in Striped Pyjamas this is shown by the Father, Hitler. Also Kotler beating up Pavel over he had miss poured the wine.…

The writer obviously has a very good sense of what thoughts and anguishes would of have run through a young boys head, as he writes with such empathy – ‘..which Bruno knew to be true because he always taught the big boys who it was always wise to steer clear of’ – as if he too was an 8 year old boy. That…
