Friendship is a component of human existence that builds character while transforming one’s perspective on life. The film, The Bucket List, directed by Rob Reiner, explores the paradigm shift of both protagonists, Edward Cole and Carter Chambers. In this film the director demonstrates that shared adversity, honest debate, and mutual understanding can completely transform one another’s perspective. Initially Edward Cole and Carter Chambers were on different ends of the spectrum but were almost exactly the same. Edward Cole was a rich man who thought about always getting the last cent out of people’s pockets. Due to this however Edward never had time for anything but business. “I always worried about work so much that I never had any time for
a family”. The director shows through this quote that Edward might have started a family but because of his obsession with work Edward never had time for anyone but himself. Carter Chambers wanted to become a history teacher but because of a baby on the way Carter quit university and became a mechanic to help his family. Because of these circumstances Carter had worked a lot to support his family. “ I was going to be a history teacher but with college debt, being black, and a baby on the way I decided I would get a job and support my family.” The director shows through this quote that Carter also was a workaholic but because Carter worked so hard for his family Carter never got to do anything himself. In conclusion Carter and Edward are both very similar but focused on either bringing joy to oneself or joy to others, but cancer has ways of bringing people together. However when they found out about the cancer killing them in about six to eight months they realize because they had spent all their time working they never got to live their lives. When Carter created the bucket list it was tossed by Carter because it was an impossible task to complete those goals. be able to complete it. “ I created a bucket list of things I would like to do before I die but I can't do it now”. This quote shows that Carter focusing on family would have just stayed with the family and waited to die. However Edward saw the list and was moved by it and added some goals so they could go out in a bang. “ Don't you want to go out guns blazing.” “ Don't worry about money I have plenty of it.” These Edward quotes show that Edward wants one last hurray before death and wants Carter to come with because Carter has not done anything with his life but work. Due to this collaboration between Edward and Carter, it allows them to do some of their goals or aspirations they never got to do in their regular lives and think about death and reincarnation. Throughout their worldwide trip Edward and Carter Keep asking each other about death and the religion each thinking in different ways.
Edward believes that a person dies and nothing happens and they stay dead. “We live, we die, the wheels on the bus go round and round.” Through this quote we can analyze that Edward due to just working believes that no one is incarnated because of him not having anyone around him who actually cared about him. Carter believes that there is a heaven and hell and to get into heaven you have to answer two questions “Did you bring joy to yourself? Did you bring joy to others? These two questions answers are different between Edward and Carter because they are only able to answer one of the questions. After this we see that Edward is able to bring Joy to Edward through their worldwide trip and Carter is able to feel joy for himself. Through their debates on religion and death they were able to strengthen their friendship and cause a change in their thoughts. Through the film, The Bucket List, Rob Reiner showed that through shared adversity, honest debate, and mutual understanding can strengthen friendship.
