The Buried Giant
The Buried Giant has two types of journeys, physical and mental. Axl is one if the main characters on these journeys. As the journey progresses, Alx's characterization enhances. Axl and his wife are analogous to most senior citizens who suffer from memory loss. On Occasions, the couple will remember bits and pieces of their past. One event Beatrice remembered is that they had a son and that he lives in another village. Axl asks permission to leave and the two start their physical journey in the book. One theme could be the theme of the unreliability of historical memory. This is true because no one remembering how, when, or why everyone not being able to remember anything.
Along the way of their physical journey, they made two detours.

The boatman is in charge of ferrying couples across the lake to an island. First, he has to confirm that the couple's relationship is strong enough. This is where one of the mental journeys comes from. This journey is to see how strong their relationship is. Especially since they cannot recall any memories together.
Another mental journey is to find who Axl was before the fog erased his memory. As his physical journey continues with Winston, Axl begins to notice things. For example, Axl notices how Winston holds his sword, always available for a fight. Another example is that Axl notices how Winston fights. He fights like he was born and raised like a Saxon knight. Axl is starting to remember his past and what he used to be to a small extent. One theme that could best reflect Axl now is the past and how it interacts with the present. Axl's past is best mirrored by Winston's mannerisms.
In the ending of the book, Axl finally remembers that their son had died in a mysterious plague. They buried their son on the island the boatman ferries to. Beatrice refuses to accept this unless she sees this with her own eyes, she returns to the boatman. The boatman concludes that their relationship is not strong enough. Beatrice still gets on the boat. Axl walks away and is unable to deal with losing Beatrice. The best fitting theme is that we nurture events, but never quite understand or confront

In the book, Red Kayak, by Priscilla Cummings, there are multiple themes. A theme is the main idea or underlying meaning of a literary work and it can be directly stated or implied. Being able to understand a theme is critical to decipher an author’s message. One of the numerous themes in Red Kayak is that death is everywhere and it can be very hard to deal with. In Red Kayak, Brady along with his friends, J.T. and Digger, live in the Chesapeake bay region of Maryland. All of them have great memories together and have been friends for a long time. Soon, rich people start moving in close proximity to where Brady and his parents live. This upsets families and friends (especially Digger). When Mrs. and Mr. DiAngelo move in, Brady discovers that…

A theme that would describe the book is Censorship, or restriction. Censorship would be a good theme to describe the book because the story is about books being banned in the future because those who read books will have a higher intellect than others. They want to put a restriction to people reading books because it would mean that one person will be higher than the other just because he or she has read more books than any other human on this Earth. It would also mean that everyone isn’t equal because of books.…

He fished for a living, to keep his wife happy, but he was never truly a fisherman. He did not enjoy fishing like the rest of his wife’s family did. His skin was not tough enough as “the salt water irritated his skin as it had for sixty years…and his arms, especially the left, broke out into the oozing saltwater boils”. (paragraph 60) The sun and wind took a toll on his body that the others did not experience. To him, the boat held emotions such as pain, despair and struggle. He would rather be inside, reading and learning, but was instead forced to…

In the text “Late Ferry” Gray expresses his experiences with discovery when his understanding and perceptions on life alter. Gray portrays his view on life when he is observing different stages of the ferries leaving Sydney Harbour. The contrast of the yachts and the late ferry symbolises the simplicity and darkness of life. “Tomato stake patch of the yachts” metaphorically creates an image that the yachts are safely secured. This idea is juxtaposed to the “neon redness” in the water which conjures up ideas of danger. Gray takes the reader on a literal metaphorical journey where he discovers that life is much like the harbour where the yachts safely anchored and secure represent the innocence of life, but eventually we must venture out into the real world just like the ferry heading for the huge dark waters. By contrast, Amy’s understandings and perceptions change through discovering the value of her native and commits to learn the language which is a privilege she had previously denied her grandfather. This is shown when she uses a naïve tone “I don’t think my grandfather understood much English” at the beginning of the text but later her tone is full of a sense of regret and respects her grandfather when she confesses “I’d denied my grandfather the commonest of kindness”. This new area of study will not only renew perceptions and create new understandings but…

The theme of the Novel would defiently have to be discovery. The reason why I chose this specific theme is because Anthony Robles talks about conquering the unknown. Also because Anthony discovers that he has great strength and found something that he loves. The reason why I believe that the Novel has been written is to motivate people and show them that anyone can reach there dreams.…

The characters, a girl and boy who send love letters to one another, even though the letters will most likely never be read by the other, “i will keep writing like we promised to do, i hate it, but will keep writing. you keep writing too, okay?” (p. 8). The two continue writing, believing the other is as well. Over time the girl hears about a boat that had sunk off the coast of the Bahamas, where the boy had been going. She figures that her beloved has drowned, “Behind these mountains are more mountains and more black butterflies still and a sea that is endless like my love for you” (p. 29). The complex characters of the two, boy and girl and their love for each other is so heartwarming. When the boy drowns and the girl gets so sad and down, you can see the mood clearly. The mood of depression and everything is hopeless, not even love can…
