Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to synthesize Isopentyl Acetate using a Fischer esterification reaction. Fischer esterification is an acid-catalyzed condensation of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid, yielding an ester and water. Isopentyl Acetate has the scent of banana oil, once synthesized it will be purified by distillation. Then the analysis of the sample using H NMR and IR will determine purity of the product.…

This experiment contains three separate procedures in which Aluminum Potassium Sulfate(Alum) will be melted, massed out and mixed with Barium Nitrate, along with distilled Water. Procedure one we completed two trials of melting two separate 0.01g of Alum and making a comparison to the literature temperature of 92.5, to do this we attached an Alum filled capillary tube to a thermometer and inside a beaker placed over a Bunsen burner. Procedure two consisted of placing 2.00 grams of Alum into a crucible and heating it over a Bunsen burner while making sure to take the separate masses as well as the masses of the Alum before and after heating. Procedure three was determining the outcome of mixing the Alum with distilled water and Barium Nitrate…

Pinacol was converted to pinacolone in the experiment at a 15.60% yield. A low percent yield was expected due to the experimental distillation and experimental separation of the two layers. Some pinacolone could have been trapped in the aqueous layer due to experimental error at separating via a pipet. The IR showed peaks at 2967, 2906, 2871, 2359, 2337, 2173, and 1989. The representative peaks in an IR of pinacolene are present between 3000 and 1700. The NMR when manipulated with a multiple of three, showed the presence of 9 hydrogens at 1.2 ppm and 3 hydrogens at 2.1 ppm. The typical NMR for pinacolone shows peaks around 20, 40, and 70 ppm due to the electronegativity of the oxygen present in the compound. The NMR of the organic product is inconsistent with the typical NMR of pinacolone or water. This could potentially be due to a mixture of the two compounds when the NMR was run and is due to the experimental error in the separation of the aqueous and organic layers by pipet. We began our research by treating chalcone 1a (??) with acetylacetone 2a (??) in the presence of morpholine as the base (??) in CH3CN at 80 ºC for 12 h. The reaction was monitored by TLC until the disappearance of the starting material and the formation of 1-(5-benzoyl-2-methyl-4-phenyl-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-yl)ethanone 3a. this reaction mixture, containing the 2,3-dihydrofuran 3a generated in situ, was treated with sulfur element (??) in the presence of base of morpholine (??) at 80°C and the desired thiophene 4a was obtained in ?? % yield, after 5 h (Table 1). In order to find out the best reaction conditions for the synthesis of thiophene 4a, the reaction of 1a (??mmol) and 2a (?? mmol) have been screened by various parameters such as type and amount of base, reaction solvents and reaction temperatur.…

Aspirin is known as a pain reliever for muscle ache, head ache and can prevent heart attacks as well as blood clots, and many more things that it can help with. Aspirin is known as Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is a Salicylate. Salicylates are organic acids from plants that people for hundreds of years have been used for pain reducing. Salicylic acid irritates the stomach when consumed so German scientist Felix Hoffman suggested ASA as an alternative. Aspirin is made when Acetic Anhydride reacting with Salicylic acid to produce Acetylsalicylic acid and Acetic acid (diluted vinegar). Aspirin is in millions of home today and in America, about 50 million tablets are consumed every day. When aspirin ages it breaks down and returns to the main chemicals that made the reaction.…

    Aspirin Lab

The purpose of this lab was to synthesize and purify aspirin. The theoretical yield was calculated to 3.766g. The actual yield of pure aspirin was 2.863g with a yield of 76%. The percent yield indicates that our synthesis was a success but the yield is low and indicates that some of the aspirin was lost during synthesis. Some reasons for loss can result from human error such as loosing product from sticking on the spatula and the Buchner funnel and several weighings. Also, when transferring the crude aspirin into the vacuum filtration, some of the crystals stayed in the flask. Some steps that would produce a better yield for future experiments is rinsing the flask with cold water to make sure that all product is transferred. Something else that can improve the experiment is allowing more than fifteen minutes for the Acetyl Salicylic acid to sit in the ice bath; this will allow for more product to crystallize out from solution and will allow for a higher percent yield. Another reason for product loss may be due to the temperature of the water that was used to wash the crude and purified aspirin. Although aspirin is not soluble in water, everything has some solubility in water and in this case aspirin is soluble in higher temperatures and large amounts of water. The water that was used may not have been chilled enough and product was lost. For future experiments the temperature of the water for washings should be taken to verify that it is cold enough to use and a less amount of water should be used.…

The main purpose of this experiment was to utilize the principles of cyclic voltammetry to determine technique accuracy in calculating the actual concentration of an acetaminophen elixir. Five standard solutions of acetaminophen and an acid buffer solution were created and analyzed with a potentiostat to determine the peak anodic voltage and current during the scanning process. Three solutions of Tylenol®—containing acetaminophen—and acid buffer were then created and scanned at the same scan rate as the five standard solutions. Additionally, the most concentrated standard solution was scanned at five different scan rates (between 100 and 500 mV/s) in order to develop a relationship between observed current and scan rate. The Randles-Sevcik…

Tracheal segments were isolated from male Wistar rats aged 6‐8 weeks from the Animal Resources Centre, Murdoch, and W.A. Tissues suspended in baths containing Krebs solution maintained at 37oC and bubbled with 5% CO2 in O2 throughout the experiments. Preparations were then equilibrated for 45 min to 500 mg of tension with Kerbs solution replaced after 15 min. The viability of each tissue was evaluated by examining the contractile responses to carbachol .0.2µM was added to produce a sub maximal contraction followed by 10 µM. Once a stable contractile tone had been attained, tissues were relaxed to baseline tension (500mg) for 20 min. However, tissues that did not contract or contraction was less than 500mg were deemed unviable and discarded. Receptor‐selective agonists and antagonists were used in conjunction with isometric tension recording techniques to characterize the muscarinic cholinoceptor subtype that mediate contraction in the preparation. The functional studies provided information regarding the presence of muscarinic cholinoceptors that mediate contraction only. Thus radioligand binding techniques were also employed to determine which muscarinic cholinoceptor subtypes were present and their relative densities.…

Acetyl chloride, CH3COCl, also known as ethanoyl chloride or acyl chloride, is an acid chloride derived from acetic acid. It belongs to the class of organic compounds called acyl halides. It is a colorless liquid. Acetyl chloride does not exist in nature, because contact with water would hydrolyze it into acetic acid and hydrogen chloride. In fact, if handled in open air it gives off white smoke owing to the hydrolysis from the moisture in the air. The "smoke" is actually small droplets of hydrochloric acid formed by hydrolysis.…
