The Business Case for Csr
The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility is a relatively new in the management field and there is no single definition of it since everyone’s interpretation of the term is different. “Corporate Social Responsibility means something, but not always the same thing to everybody.” (Votaw, 1972, p.25) and from my understanding of the concept, CSR to me is “The voluntary business activities within the boundary of law that contributes to the wider community for a more sustainable environment”. Since everyone has a unique interpretation of CSR, the range of relevant CSR practices across businesses has been quite diverse as there is no such thing as features of CSR (Marcel van Marrewijk, 2003). Rising environmental and social concerns in recent years have leaded a large number of managers to focus on the importance of the contemporary concept of corporate social responsibility. “91 percent of executives believe that corporate responsibility creates shareholder value, or that 80 percent say that non-financial indicators are essential to characterize future financial performance.” (Blowfield and Murray, 2008, p.131; Figures from Ethical Corporation and Nima Hunter Inc, 2003) Therefore they generally agree with Davis that “A better society produces a better environment for business” (1973, p.313). Many researchers have shown that CSR can bring competitive advantages to businesses and suggested that in the long- run it can generate positive business performances (Blowfield and Murray, 2008). If that is the case, why isn’t every business doing it? Although the number of supporters of the business case for CSR is large, but so do the opposite view. Hence in this essay, I will explore the arguments and evidences both for and against the business case for CSR to provide a more solid foundation for my thesis that “Corporate social responsibility contributes to businesses”.

    For many decades, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been viewed as a waste of resources – money, labor, time, etc. – which conflicts with the firm’s responsibility to make profits in order to compensate its shareholders (Friedman, 1970; Henderson, 2001; Jensen, 2002; Levitt, 1958; Sundaram & Inkpen, 2004). On the contrary, especially during the last years, many supporters of CSR came up with the argument that CSR provides a company with a series of specific benefits that very often will outweigh the expenditures. Some are even of the opinion that CSR is necessary for business, both from an economic and a social point of view (Brown & Fraser, 2006; Drucker, 1984; Kotler & Lee, 2005; Mintzberg, 1983; Porter & Kramer, 2006).     Over the last two decades, the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has attracted considerable attention academic circles as well as in practice.     Historical evidence suggests that societal concerns for businesses to have social obligations are not new and that such concerns have continually ebbed and flowed at various times (Camilla, 1991). John & Saks (2011) agree that societal concerns are one of the components of the external environment faced by corporations that should not be ignored. However, the latest manifestation of these societal concerns in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) appears to defy conventional patterns. This is because CSR has increasingly become an essential part of doing business in today’s globalized and competitive environment. Yet, the concept of CSR lacks a consensual definition and remains a contested concept (Devinney, 2009). Hence, the tendency in the literature has been to define CSR in different ways that often reflect the interest of the person who is defining the concept (see Devinney, 2009). Consequently, critics like Devinney (2009) have suggested that this lack of a consensual definition for CSR poses a major conceptual and analytical weakness.     There is an ongoing debate over business roles in society which revolves around two opposing arguments. On the one hand, it is argued that CSR issues are not suitable to corporate agenda. This point of view maintains that corporations and society pursue different goals, and that the aims of one can only be achieved at the expense of the other. Companies are profit driven, and the sole purpose of business is to generate shareholder value. On the other hand, CSR proposes that companies which participate in activities that positively contribute to society will see the benefits to their reputation and subsequently their bottom line.
