The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allan Poe
In Edgar A. Poe's short story, "The Cask of Amontillado”, Montresor, the main character of “The Cask of Amontillado” is insulted by Fortunato, and swears vengeance against him. He knows that Fortunato knows a lot about and is passionate about wine, and uses this to his advantage. Montresor lures him down into his catacombs, where he chains Fortunato to a wall. The setting is used to show how evil Montresor truly is, as he and his “friend” go deeper into the depths of his crypts. It symbolizes that on the surface, everything may seem happy-go-lucky, but pure hell can be found underneath.
