Edgar Ellen Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” published in 1846 depicts an imperfect revenge operated by the narrator on his friend who has insulted him. Poe uses an unreliable narrator who is writing the story for a memoir. At the end of the story, the narrator commit the crimes and have a hard time as he has to live with guiltiness for the rest of his life. The title refers to wine as a temptation for humans to do evil things. Poe uses both irony and symbolism in the story to reveal implications of the theme.
