The gospel is good news because it is a gift of God, not something that must be earned by penance or by self-improvement. John 3:16 says “For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” In 1 Corinthians 15:1-8, the apostle Paul summarizes the most basic facts of the gospel message, namely, the death, burial, resurrection, and appearances of the resurrected Christ. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (Romans 8:14-17). The two contrasting phrases used to differentiate the relationship that God wants are bondage and Abba, Father. Bondage refers to slavery while “Abba, Father” is a very personal reference to God as Father. Jesus the Christ used this term, “Abba, Father,” when He was praying in the garden before His greatest trial (Mark 14:36). This is the same approach God told us to take through Paul’s letter to the Romans. Romans 5:8 says “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Without Jesus dying for our sins a relationship with God would be non-existent. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” says Romans
