In the article The Changing Culture of Childhood: A Perfect Storm by Joe L. Frost, the idea that a “perfect storm” in the educational system is brewing due to standardized tests. By implementing“teach to the test,” it’s affecting the time in a child’s life to play and increasing the poverty rate worldwide.
According to Frost, standardized testing has taken the “individuality, creativity, cooperative learning, community involvement, and the balance of academics and other activities,” out of our education. It has left students feeling overwhelmed and turning towards drugs because they can handle these “high stake tests.” These tests are showing a huge gap between minority and non minority students and then a gap between working class and middle class families. The usual play outside in the cul de sac has been exchanged for video games and extra curricular activities that will boast their children’s test scores.Due to technology becoming a key involvement in children’s lives today, a higher rate of obesity around the world is apparent. Summer camps, that used to be about adventuring throughout the great outdoors, has now turned into weight loss camps and computer camps. Recess is slowly being shrunk nation wide because more importance is being put on academics. According to Frost, ADHD and obesity have not become more prevalent due to the lack of activity time.

    We have more children growing up today with disabilities and diseases caused by poor health and exercise then we have ever had before. The percent of kids that are overweight or unhealthy compared to 30 years ago has more than tripled in all ages. “The prevalence of obesity in children ages 2-5 increased from 4.8 percent in 1971-74 to 12.1 percent in 2009-2010.     Standardized testing is something you're bound to come across in public schools as soon as first grade. I remember taking test after test as a public school student, and I can't really say I ever got anything out of it. These tests are putting so much pressure on teachers and students a like. A bunch of old men sitting around a table who've never even stepped foot in my school can make a test and say that it evaluates what students have learned as a whole. The problem with standardized testing, its just that, its standardized. Humans strive by working with their peers, giving them the chance to directly feed off of what others are thinking. However this is being pushed aside by the hustle and bustle of teaching a multiple choice test. Standardized testing is being over used and abused. How we are testing, who we are testing, why we are testing. We need to evaluate if its really worth all the money and trouble in the end. According to the teachers on the receiving end these tests seem to be doing more harm than help. Teachers feel they are just teaching a multiple choice test now to assure that their students do well. Testing also takes money, resulting in many districts cutting programs such as arts. Standardized testing is also a money making business, someone out there needs to sell these tests to your school district so they can take a pay check home.
