The Character Analysis Of Laerte's Transformation Into Nightingale

The character in the story, Laertes, did not know who he was. He was still trying to figure out who he is, and what he wanted as his careers. These are some points he made that proves he did not know himself and what he wanted as careers. He states that “I might mention here that I did not arrive at the decision I made during the next year because I wanted to appear eccentric or unique in the eyes of others. It was more my growing awareness that I couldn’t select a conventional, bourgeois profession without in some way interfering with other people’s lives” (Halpern 348). As much as it is unethical to turn another person into an animal, Laertes wanted to change himself into nightingale to migrate from one place to another. Also, he was more worried about ethics than his career so he gave up magic since it is not right due to the fact that he didn’t want to interfere in other people’s lives.
However, the magician wanted to change himself into nightingale to migrate from one place to another. As we can see, Laertes decided to change into a bird because he wanted his freedom to move from place to place singing his songs. According to Halpern, “my choice of the form of the nightingale was by no means arbitrary. I wanted to be a bird because the thought of being able to fly from one tree to another was very appealing. Furthermore, I wanted to sing because I love music” (350).
Changing a person into someone or something else is wrong. But, Laertes did not care anymore since he was been transformed. According to Halpern, he said that “the thought that I would interfere in the life of someone else whose sleep I might disturb did occur to me. But now that I am no longer human, I have put away my human thoughts and interests. My ethic is of a nightingale”
