The characteristics of an Epic Hero during the Anglo-saxon periods were bravery, strength, and loyalty. The story of Beowulf began with the challenge of slaying the monster, Grendel. In order for him to slay this monster, and the others, he had to have the traits and abilities of an hero. Ever since beowulf defeated Grendel, he has been known for his bravery, strength, and loyalty; a true Epic Hero. Beowulf shows his bravery in many different ways throughout the poem. His bravery is demonstrated in the fight against Grendel and against Grendel's mother.
